I'm getting a set of Hella 500 fogs for my Libby, for Christmas, and want to mount them to the front bumper, in front of the factory fog lights. Anything I should be aware of as far as potential problems? I assume that I just drill down through the plastic fascia, into steel(?), and mount the lights from below? Is there a steel bumper under the plastic fascia? Any chance of hitting the air bag sensor? Thanks!

There is no steel, just plastic. When I mounted my lights on the original bumper I estimated where I wanted them, measured them so they were fairly symetrical, marked them with an ice pick then looked underneath to make sure that the holes were going to come out in a spot where I could get at them with a wrench and drilled the holes. I had to run some extra wires from the bolts to the body for the negative connection.

Thanks Guys! One question... When the lights are mounted only to the plastic, are they secure? I mean, do they wiggle or move at all? Thanks again.

Hmmm, I'd be interested in seeing where you mounted your lights; when I put mine on I drilled thru both the plastic and the underlying metal. I'm pretty sure where I mounted mine are the same location that the OEM lights are mounted on the new Renegades (on the bumper in front of the grille openings for the smaller factory lights).

The 2006 book for my Renegade lists a fog lamp mounting kit but I don't think it would work for the older models with the different fascia.

It probably won't fit an '05 sport either without some work. Before buying the RME foglight kit (i believe its the same as the renegade), I asked the dealership several times if it would work with a sport. Of course they said it should, and of course it didn't. The fog light mounting bracket had two holes; the lower one lined up to a hole in the front part of the metal bumper support, but the top hole had no corresponding hole.

hmmmm I would think it would work with a Sport since I have an 06 Sport with the Renegade style fog lamps installed, they just placed them in front of where the grill inserted fog lamps would have gone...

If you ever take off your front bumper for any reason, i would love to know how they attached them. I had a friend weld the brackets to the bumper, i can't remember why we chose that over drilling another hole. What i do remember is that using only one mounting point wasn't very stable.

Sure thing, I'll probably be taking care of a lot of cleaning and maintenance on the Heep this weekend so I'll see if I can get some pics snapped for ya, if not just tell ya how they are attached...

Mine are mounted into the plastic bumper only. No bounce and no shake.

Do you have a close up pic of where they are located?? How did you get underneath to attach the bolt? Did you take your bumper off to do this? I like where yours are located. Thanks.

If they are mounted on top like this. click on pix

You can drill the hole where you want to place your lites and put the nut serts like these in the holes and then mount you lites .you don't have to
worry about getting to the nuts
Image Image
nut serts were used on mine and have never came loose they held my rockers on the 05 unlimited. no need to get an fancy tool to do it either if you are interested I will show you how to do it.

I drilled down through the plastis ,and put them in the medal
It was just under the plastic, on anouther kj we just put them in the plastic and the metal. it would make it hard to get the plastic cover off it you needed to.

I simply drilled thru the bumper after carefully measuring the distance. I did not take off the bumper. I used flat washers top & Bottom. Look under the bumper and you will see two recessed areas where you can mount them. Extensions will be needed. Take the grill out. This will give you more room to work. You will need to anyway to run your wires.

I just finished installing my Hella 500 fog lights. I searched all over the front bumper, trying to find a spot where I could get them mounted to a piece of steel, under the plastic, without dismantling the entire front of the Libby, to no avail. The location I ended up using (see below), was about the only place I could put them and still reach the nuts with my fingers, from behind the grill. They are mounted, using the Hella hardware, through two pieces of plastic, and seem pretty secure.

I ran the wires under the grill and connected them to the factory fog light connectors, having removed the bulbs, using two modified spade lugs, which plugged into the factory connectors. Since I'm using the factory fog light switch, on the turn signal stalk, no additional wiring was necessary.

Here's how they look...
