This may be boasting or funny depending on your viewpoint, but I played 18 holes by the Texas Motor Speedway today and it was 63 and sunny! 8) 8) 8)

Wow! No way my jeep would ever make it through something like that.. If you were having that much trouble with the MTR's, Lockers and LS's front and rear, no way I would make it with A/T's and just a rear locker.. I would be stuck. :(

I think that most A/Ts will beat MTRs in snowy conditions. Look at real winter tires - the profile of A/Ts is more like them than the MTRs profile is.

See the Goodyear website - the MTR gets 8 points in snow traction the AT gets 10 points (the maximum)

Cool video

Here'e my thinking after owning both Bridgestone AT REVO and Goodyear MTR...

AT in 3" or less...best for packed snow and ice.

MTR in 3"+...definitely.

This stuff sucks, Jeep is at Marty's, so all I have is the volvo xc and subaru... Snow was up to the middle of the windows on the xc, and 2" from over the top of the subaru!!!

Spent over 4 hrs shoveling today!!! Then the plows came and closed my drive again, so I had some fun with a piece of plywood and the subaru...I should have taken a picture of my redneck plow, it doubles as a spoiler in the summer when you add a couple 2x4s. That thing is the best car I have ever had in this stuff other than the hieght issue... that and it is a POS, I don't care if I wreck it as long as it still runs!

As for tires, I like the BFG A/T's a lot better than the MTRs, that is why I still have my BFG's on the stock steels for winter. MTRs are great if you have speed, but slow traffic with breaking, the BFG's are much better.

The idea of traction is totally different in a fresh 2 foot pile of hard, wet snow. A/Ts and winter tires do the best in packed snow, for some reason. But for deep snow 6"+ I wouldn't do anything other than a max. traction tire like mud-terrains or MT/Rs. With sticky, wet snow, you need self-cleaning otherwise your tires will donut like A/Ts do in mud.

Snow Totals:

Aurora, CO = 31"

Castle Rock, CO = 26"

Parker, CO = 37"

Conifer, CO = 42"

Evergreen, CO = 40"

Denver (official) = 20.7"

Boulder, CO = 32"

I can't believe I have missed two of the largest snowfalls in Denver history! The one in March 2003 dropped 31.8" in Denver (not sure what Aurora got) and this one. Both times out of state. I love snow!

Denver record snowfall was in Dec 1913 with 45.7" of snow. March 2003 was #2. If Denver goes by ITS official snowfall of 20.7", it won't make the top five but I look at Aurora's snowfall of 31" and it goes to second place all time.

Joel, I hope youe KJ is house trained. It is gonna pee a lot in your garage.

That is sweet! Yet another reason for us CRD owners to ditch the stock air box with the intake in the lower part of the front pass side grill :!:

I don't understand the MTR/bad in snow thing...mine performed much much better than I expected (based on all the hearsay) in the deep mash potato stuff that was on the roads on Wednesday and better than any tire I have experience with. They readily threw off the snow and did not (noticeably) cake up.

I had no problems (other than having to put it in 4-lo) in the deep stuff. Heck, after the plows screwed up my driveway I just bashed up and over the 2.5 foot pile blocking it. Needed to put it in 4-low for that but my KJ with the MTR's just went over and through it with little issue. I went through this pile a dozen time to clear it out of the way.

My cavalier with all weather tires however, is just plain stuck in the driveway. Tried to move it around and got stuck 3x before I moved it back to where it originally was and gave up.

One last note. We had about 24" at my house and about 35" in Golden where I work.

Its on hard packed and icy stuff that the MTR's will probably show their weakness in the snow, If they can dig down to pavement you are fine but once it slicks up you MIGHT have trouble. Now if someone was to have at least the center section siped they would Probably be more well rounded.

Ok, that makes a little sense at why the AT's perform better on the packed/ice. I think they have a bit more surface area to grip those surfaces while the MTR's have all the deep lugs and side lugs to pull its way through the deep stuff and throw off the stuff that gets in the grooves.

Just did a little more research. Here is that latest comparison update on tirerack.com of many of the most common off-road tires.

Tire Rack.com off-road tire comparison chart

Haha! 30 inches. Insane. I like snow, but not that much!

Good job! If we ever get snow here, I'll venture out with my windshield camcorder mount.

You would make it. I am not lifted, I have BFG AT KO's and pretty much stock. and i went through 12 inches of snow without a problem. I also pulled two cars out, took a care package to my daughter and took one person home during the storm. the jeep did fine and I never got stuck. so if i can do it, you can do it also.
