I’m looking for a good 3” mandrel bent exhaust for my CRD. I found all kinds of aftermarket stuff for my Cummins, but the CRD is a different story. My Cummins came factory with 4”mandrel bent exhaust, so all I needed to do was add an aeroturbine and I was good to go. I really believe that the factory exhaust on the CRD is restricting. Adding the 3” pipe would be a positive upgrade with the appropriate aeroturbine. So any suggestions?

I would be interestedin this as well, but currently one isn't offered. Another member here had one custom made at a shop, and it wasn't cheap. So ATM, a custom job is the only option if you want 3". Also worth noting, is that on the 3" custom exhaust that another member had done, there was still a portion before and after the CAT IIRC, that was restricted down to 2.5" by flanges.

Thanks for the info. I will give them a call to fan the flame. There's an exhaust guy not far from me who does excellent custom work with high performance exhaust. He doesn't have a mandrel bending machine which he says costs like $140,000, so I understand. He knows the physics and science that goes into exhaust and is able to think outside the box. I may take it to him so he could put on his lift and study the possibilities. I'm thinking, “just thinking", but I saw a nice custom CRD that was a side exit exhaust that was dumped on the passenger side in front of the rear tire. He used a magnaflow muffler. You can check out his step by step description, thoughts, and photos here:

The only down side would be the clearance that would be lost. But I do like the thought, and I like the looks. Any thoughts out there?

Instead of guessing or thinking the exhaust is restrictive, take an exhaust backpressure measurement and know for sure. Looking at the turbo outlet and piping I don't think so. The flange fitting behind the cat looks like a possible problem, but I'm not sure as I haven't put a gauge on the system and run'er hard.

A Pyrometer would be easy to do and a guage you'd want anyway, espsecially if doing mods afterwards. It will give a good indication of how the turbo likes less restriction from the cat back.

p.s. I really like the sound of the Magnaflow on the CRD!

Jeep elected to use the same "cookie cutter" exhaust systems......whether it be 2.4L, 2.8L CRD, or 3.7L. One cat-back system for 3 different engines just plain sucks.

I have Magnaflow's #15870 system on my CRD and it's great. It has 2.5" mandrel-bent stainless steel tubing and a nice 3.5" tip. It may be for sale in the next 30---40 days or so though....glad I kept the stocker.

Here's a link to a thread I posted :

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... ight=15870

Given the cost differences between the 3" and the Magnaflow, I'd choose the Magnaflow. These 2.8L CRD's are generally OK with just a muffler improvement / replacement / delete. I run Magnaflow's #15989 5" system on my 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 HPCR CTD, and it's over-kill.

Ok, You guys gave me some good thoughts to consider. As I said before, I'll take it to the exhaust performance guy that I know who will be up front and honest. He's the one that told me that my Cummins comes factory with a pretty good mandrel bent exhaust, it just needed the restricted factory muffler taken off and replace it with a performance muffler such as aeroturbine or magnaflow. Once I let him see it I will report back with his opinion and my final decision.

Hey, excellent write up there! I liked the sound of your exhaust. It actually sounded really good without any muffler and still sounded good with the Magnaflow as well.

My biggest concern is not additional noise, but rather vibration inside the cabin at highway speeds. I don't mind resinance, but vibration I don't like.

No-blue,
I installed a Flowmaster 40 Delta on my CRD using the stuck pipe. I have no additional resonance or vibration while driving at any speed.
