Urgent - Please help

So the wife just noticed a tube hanging down from under the Jeep. I tried to determine what this should be connected to but could not do so. The first picture shows the tube looking front rear to front. The second picture is looking straight up, it shows where the tube disappers behind the transmission. I know its's hard to see but the tube runs behind the plastic sheath, it is actually zip tied to it, and up on top of the transmission. I was unable to follow the tube any further. Can anyone tell me what this is, where it goes, and if I should be worried?

EDIT - Added third pic. This is from the passenger side. Notice that it hangs to the left of the exhaust (and transmission) and extends beyond the crossbar. it disappears up above the transmission on the front side of the crossbar.

I haven't seen that.

Just guessing - there are breather tubes for the differentials, transfer case and transmission, if one came lose - it might show like that.

Is it on the drivers side or passengers side of the transmission? It looks to be right above the crossbar holding up the transfer case/ transmission, is that correct?

It is on the drivers side.
Yes, it is right above the crossbar. It fact, it may have been this way for sometime and just was not visible because it was hung on the crossbar.

It is on the drivers side.
Yes, it is right above the crossbar. It fact, it may have been this way for sometime and just was not visible because it was hung on the crossbar.

Bizzaro!! I just crawled under the drivers side of mine and all I could see that even remotely looked like your picture was the trasfer case lever cable encased in a rubber tube. Does your transfer case lever work ok?
I then crawled over to the passenger side, and did not even see any type of a tube next to the exhaust and the cross bar.
Maybe I was not looking hard enough?

Just took it out and it went into and out of 4wd no problems.

It looks like it should normally be tucked up towards the top of the tranny on the drivers side, but I can't see anything that it would connect to.

It is the vent tube for the axel, just get some zip ties and zip it high as you can. IF you have warranty just take it back and have them replace the clip, and or clip it back into place.

So a vent tube for the axel you say... hmmm...

So it doesn't actually connect anywhere? I am still under warranty, but rather avoid taking it to the dealer if just zip tying it in place is all that needs to be done.

Either axel or transfer case, both hafe a vent tube.
Look at the rear axle during the day and you will see the one near the weel well.

ps.

if you zippi tie it leave some free play for suspension and point the cap to the sky not that it makes a difference, unless you plan on going through deep creeks then point it down wards.

I had to move mine on my Ram since I love river crossings.....

Yes it should be hooked up to the top of the transfer case. The picture below has a nib on top of the transfer case where the tube needs to be attached to. You can see it protruding from the top of the transfer case.
I basically had to get a dentist mirror to figure out where the tube went. Then I logged on to dealerconnect and got a schematic of the transfer case below to verify what I saw.

Cutezangel is correct. However, you better have some small hands to get up in there and put the tube back on!

I also noticed what appears to be duct tape in the area. You may need to take that red hose clamp off and gently bend it so that it will make a tighter connection when you put it back on. Strange that it came off like that.

Ok if the diff and the transfer case have vent tubes what keeps crap from going down the tube the other way?

Yes, the end that is hanging down needs to be attached to the metal tube on top of the transfer case.
On the schematic below, #11 is the vent tube
#12 is the vent hose that vanishes above the transmission
#14 is the end of the hose that needs to go to #11
#13 is the ventcap that allows the pressure to be released. The hose just terminates at the vent cap

Is the NV242 the correct transfer case?

I will try to attached it myself tomorrow, if I cannot get it done I'll just have to get the dealer to do it.

ROCK ON! You solved your own question!

As for the transfer case type, it depends on your vehicle. Yes there is a NV242, NV241 and NV231 corresponding to product codes DHP, DHE and DHN. All three of them are going to have the same vent tube setup.

I think all CRD's had NV242's - at least in the US, don't know about export versions.

If it's not the transfer case vent - it could also be transmission and front differential vents lines - they all have one somewhere.

The NV242 is the select trac, the NV 241/231 is the command-trac.
The tube was the transfer case vent per below.
