And the kicker is, I did a double oil change just before this fillup to flush all the soot out of the crankcase. After 125 miles, it still looks like new oil with a blackish tint, just getting enough of a tint now to be able to read the level on the dipstick without turning it this way and that to catch the light. :D

Hey! I'm slow too!!! :P I'm still having a hard time believing people are getting 5 or 6 mpg more. I'm waiting on people to do their hand-calcs and when I fill up next I'll unplug the sucker myself.

When folks talk about how long it takes the needle to leave the "pegged" position, I'm skeptical as I can get 120 miles, or 60 miles from that point depending on the fillup/shutoff/topoff situation.

But 5 to 6 mpg??? That's just crazy insane! Post up more data folks! 8)

Didn't I read somewhere that you plugged yours back in? Might be mistaken. If it was you, I was wondering why you did it?

My 30mpg is based on 140 miles divided by a 4.6 gallon fill up. I always top off the same and measure milage at every fill up.

I was getting an average of 24 on the highway before that.

I have noticed on this current tank (120 miles to date) that I am getting more milage than I would before.

I plan on going at least 400 before filling up again and taking another measurement.

I'm also one who hasn't done this mod...yet. Keep the data coming in! Also, it would be really cool if this mod could be done and not have the MIL continuously on.

Please note that the large MPG increases are primarily in highway driving. If you do a mix of city or mostly city don't expect such dramatic results.

Now, I'll give 50 bucks to the first person who can think of a similar quick and easy mod that has similar results in my 06 PD TDI. Should I randomly start unplugging crap :-) ?

I have not reset my mileage on the evic in 3400 miles. 29.8 is showing on the computer now. Here is the strange part. As I let the mileage accumulate, I expected the fluctuation in mpg to become more stable. Last friday, I pulled into the garage showing 31.5 mpg. Over the weekend, I hauled a trailer for a couple of trips to the HomeDepot. When I left out this morning, my computer was showing 25.6. Now in less that 1 tank, I'm back to near 30 accumulated mpg.

I plugged the MAF back in this morning to run by the dealer to have him check out a leak in the rear diff. I forgot how crappy it runs plugged in. After the service manager checked the leak, I climbed back in a drove to the end of the parking lot, opened the hood, and unplugged her.

Wait, I thought the benifit would come from city driving becasue the EGR opens more under load. Someone explain it again tothis old dog..

Meanwhile, can't figure out how to plug that tricky little thing in. Maybe you need a special tool. Guess I'll just have to wait until the next time I see the dealer and they can do it... 8)

The increas in MPG should be more for city then highway driving because the EGR is open mainly for low rpm if I am remembering correctly. Anyway my guess is this coming tank (all city) is going to be 24 to 26 mpg, it is not driven on trips and seldom on the highway. Winter average was about 19 mpg city driving, so we could be looking at a 20% increase in city mileage if it does come out in the 24 to 26 mpg range.

Finally some numbers from the first full tank with ORM:
Local Driving, heavy footed wife (even on the highway), winter diesel (no biod, the shame of it), plenty of heater used: 22mpg
EDIT this is with 15k on one dirty old air filter!!!

This is up from 18-20 mpg range my wife's been getting this winter.

ORM =Easy 2 mpg improvement.
Changing her driving habits = 2-3 mpg improvement but that would be MUCH harder :)

Filled-up yesterday evening. A little over 28mpg city/highway combo! Never got over 26 mpg highway. Going to change oil tomorrow and clean boost sensor.

10% increase in fuel mileage is quite good, but teaching the wife to drive with moderation would make that a 20% increase probably.

Well, I'm brave enough to violate my warrentee in many ways, but not enough to have another discussion about her driving!

The mileage will increase in city and highway driving...maybe even more in highway. The Nitrogen(N) and Oxygen(O2) combine with Fuel (HDC) during combustion. Once the Cyclider temps reach 2500 degrees the N combines with the O2 and forms NO2. When you are cruising on the highway at a steady speed, the cyclinder temps are in the higher range and an EGR would be affecting the combustion cycle. When you are Wide Open Throttle (WOT) and a large amount of fuel is added the cyclinder temps are lower (exhaust temps higher) and the EGR is in the OFF position. In city driving at low RPM or Idle the EGR is also active.

So basically you will see gains across the board except at WOT.

Yesterday had a 200 mile run mostly 60-65 two lane confirmed at the pump
after with hand calculations 29.8 but it took 200 miles to get there. V-6 airbox
stock filter, all synthetic fluids front to rear, BP Premier Diesel with my cocktail
additive.
