I'm in the market for an OBD II reader/scanner. I have an '03 with the 3.7L. Does anyone know if the Liberty uses the CANbus protocol? I only ask because this is the year that many manufacturers starting using this protocol. I don't know if I will need to purchase a reader/scanner that utilizes this feature, or if I will be OK with the standard OBD II unit. Thanks for any help!

While we are on the subject it is my understanding that CAN bus is also requires on all 2008 USDM vehicles, can anyone confirm?

I heard that the CANbus makes you a little edgy and a little hungry, oh yea, maybe a little sweaty too.

After saying "CANbus" to myself while proof-reading my post, I KNEW someone wasn't going to be able to resist writing something about cannibus, LOL. As far as CANbus being required, yes, it is true that for 2008 it will be required. Some 2003 vehicles have it as well, hence my question. I did a little search on it to find out exactly what it is while searching for the OBD scanner. Apparently it is is more comprehensive and faster than current OBD setups. That's what it seems to me at least, since I'm no computer engineer.

Just wondering if I need one of these, or if the "ignition trick" would do everything this could, short of clearing codes? Still wondering if the Libby uses the CAN-bus protocol as well. Also, not too clear on the ignition trick, could someone explain it again? Thanks!

SavageUrge, 02-07 Libertys use the PCI bus and I'm sure 08 Libertys will use the CAN bus. In theory, any OBD-II reader should support all protocols, which is why the OBD-II connector has such a large number of pins.

More information can be found in the Jeep Liberty Wikibook on the PCI Bus page:

Thanks for the link - that explains everything! Once again, for now, what is the trick with the ignition? I'll use that until I get a scanner/code reader. Thanks!
