Well I have a buddy from work that has had a problem with his Liberty for a few months now (he just came to talk to me about it, i've told him about the board but he won't join for whatever reason), the rear tailgate won't open, it's stuck. I believe he said it was an 02 or 03. If i recall correctly that model year had a recall for a sticking latch on the tailgates right?? If I am right can anyone point me in the right direction of how to tell him to get the vehicle reserviced for it. He bought it used so of course there is no warranty or anything of that nature on it. What are his options so he won't have to pay out the arse when he takes it to the dealer? Or can he and I fix it together somehow? Forreference the window opens fine but the tailgate won't release at all from the latch that keeps it shut...

thanks for the help.

-Scott

I don't know what's wrong or how to fix it but, if it was recalled, the dealer will perform the recall work for free.

I believe the recall was for the rear glass popping open at randoms times. I had to get it performed on my 04 libby.

Ive read about a few gates doing that but Ive never heard of the out come. Its got to be something in the handle and the latch itself that has come loose or is jambed..

Exactly, go to the Jeep wesite and enter the VIN number. It will give you info on any recall that has been performed or needs to be.

he's done that recall function on their site but it shows no recalls whatsoever once entered. Not even the one for the ball joints then and recently...so i don't know...

Mine did that for awhile. I would pull the handle and the rear window would open but nothing would happen with the door unless I yanked really hard on the handle. I didn't feel like seperating my shoulder to open the rear gate. I had the dealer check it and they had to readjust the guides so it wouldn't jam. Now it works fine. Check out the guides first and make sure they are not too tight.

by guides do you mean the section of the latch that will slide over the bar and clamp over it to secure the gate shut?? I reckon a better description or picture may be needed if possible...thanks for the help...
