Can't find the rattle

I'm getting an odd rattle. Kinda sounds like when the header was hitting my superskid but that's not it and I can't find what it is.

At idle I can put it in reverse (automatic) and it'll rattle like crazy. Goes away in all other gears. Stays there in 4hi reverse as well but goes away in 4lo reverse.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hey Matt,
Have you put in the spacers for the tranny super skid? I had that same problem and didn't see the skid hitting anything but, when I put in the spacers and tightened it all back up, I haven't had a problem since.

Spacers where? In the 4 corners? And how much?

Have isolated it to that place yet but I do think I'll just drop the skid and see if it clears up.

I got 4 spacers that are about 1/2" with holes to use to drop the skid a bit to clear the exhaust. I got mine sent with my super skid plate, as I believe you should of as well.

By the way, how is the weather back home? I need to get home and see what's changed in the last few years that I haven't been there.

There is a bolt on the driver side that would rattle against my super skid if I was in reverse. I had a small notch grinded into it and the noise went away. It was like half a smidgen too close.

Ok, I pulled the superskid and noted rubbing caused by the header so I guess that was it all along. The skid is so bloody warped now (1)(2)(3)(4) that i went ahead and added 3/8" worth of spacers to all four corners. My rig did not have any spacers before. Nanette: I also cut away most of that area you show after the same problem popped up at Moab. That seems to have worked just fine. No more racket. Thanks for all the help and advise.

(1) Hate to think what a Skid-Row or other would look like by now. :shock:

Just gotta Love them all!! Nature of the beast, given our lack of clearance the KJ just Has to slip and slide it's belly over obstacles. Thank goodness for the Super Skid or we would all be buying Transmission pans or Transmissions.

I have beat my skid-row tranny skid on a ton of rocks since I have had it. I have not had to replace the trans. True it has not been tested at MOAB, but has made it through some mean rocks at Paragon when I was at stock height.

I had the skid row tranny on at moab and it actually held up fine even on easter egg hill. However, I bowed it on an easy trail not paying attention. I kind of dropped the KJ on the skid pretty darn hard. I was able to bend it back straight. I know its weaker now, but I'll keep it till its toast.

What I was able to do to prevent even further rattling is if you heat up the area where it rubs a little (not too hot) and get a big sledge and keep hitting it repeadly I was able to put a nice dent in it to prevent rattling. I also used a angle grinder to grind down a little of the metal in the area where it use to rub. I'm sure if you had access to a heavy dutty press you would be able to indent the skid to help with the exhaust rattle.

So far I've banged it hard and rested the KJ on it a couple times and so far all is good. It seems if you really drop the weight of the KJ on it then it will bend, however if you easy her on to the skid it will hold.
