rocky road-rock rail pics

I'm gonna install rock rails in the morning, anyone have pics of that install?

I really want to see the body seam bolts, do they go all the way through, does the plastic strip go back on?

Do you clamp the tapes to the "inside" between the frame and seam, or the "outside" close to the open air?

Just wanted to get a visual.

It ain't as easy as some might think, that template thing sucks!!

fastest way for all you folks in the future.

one man operation, fit it up there ,clamp it, drill pilot holes on the body seam from the back with a drimmel and small bit, take it down, drill 5/16 holes or smaller from outside in, primer holes, clamp rail back up and bolt them on, finish drilling frame holes.

reinstall the plastic trim and your done

16 minute install this way.

I don't think there are that many that do have them. AdamisAdam was trying to sell his new ones. If they do have them, they aren't very vocal, but I won't go there as to the possible reasons why. Don't want to get into product side rail protection argument again.

I bought those from Adam.

I like them especially for side impact from another car. I'm not a rock crawler. I do like some rocker protection just encase of scrapes.

Whats the downfall? I would love the opinion or a link to the opinion.

Folks, remember I asked for his opinion so don't respond with a fight. Don't trash him.

I ain't taking these rails off either.

Sorry, I won't go there. I will only say that a person should do their research on all of the products and determine their own needs, wallet size, and future possibilities.

Sometimes you just gotta say what the heck and try a product that nobody else has tried. The only way people find out if it is good or not. Someone has to be a Guinea Pig.

My previous post wasn't trying to say there is a problem with RRO's. It was on products in general.

The only issue I see is that they use two frame supports instead of three. Keep in mind that most rails only have two so that's perfectly normal. In extreme conditions a third support will help to keep the bars from bending. As you said though, you're not planning on doing much rock crawling so these should be perfect for your purposes. I'm glad you got them installed. Got any pics?

Yep same here. Glad you got them install and I am sure they will fit your needs for many years to come. Many guys have used these bars for a long time and they have worked great for them.

This should not turn in a bad subject. Everyone means well and everyone tries to provide great info here.

Third support would be cool, Even a tank has its weakness :shock:

If I were a crawler, KJ would not even be in my top 20 first choices.

I don't understand for the life of me though, why in the "H" these rail companies don't incorporate the use of the factor rail holes.

I can also see where the self tapping crap bolts could be a pull out weakness and is why I modified and used grade 8 bolts and nuts at the frame. The self tappers are just plain soft. In the rear, I RTV'd the nut to the wrench to get it up into the frame for threading.

At least I'm rid of the bogas factory step rails.

Edit: Oops, sorry just realized they were C4x4 guards not RRO.(I'm an idiot)

I had the double tube guards from RRO on my 97 XJ and was very pleased with them. I hit them pretty hard on rocks pretty often (it was only lifted 2 inches) and all I did was scratch the powder coating in several places. I used them for almost 3 years and never had any issues with the self tapping screws coming loose. The only thing I didnt like was it was a pain to clean the rocker area they protected when washing the jeep because of the double tubes with braces inbetween.

Glad you got those RRO's on. I had the RRO step rails for 2+ years and LOVED them! I worked them VERY hard. Then, they gave way on a very tough trail. RRO replaced them under warranty (really stood behind product). But they suggested the the Step Rails I had (which protruded 2.5" from the body) should be replaced with Rock Rails that you now have because the shorter supports are stronger (less leverage).

I would have kept and installed them but for the fact that I didn't want to reuse holes with self tapping bolts that were slightly pulled out from the last bent pair of rails.

So, I went with the BoulderBars. They mount in different locations (and 3 of them). I ride very hard, so the extra brace is comforting.

But let me say this, on my first trip out, I caught a root on the rocker and bent it in under the right rear door. I can't help but wonder if my wider, Step Rails would have saved my rocker there.

Give and take.

Enjoy them!

(PS Grade 8 bolts and nuts, eh? Hmmm. Maybe I'll upgrade to those as well seeing as I snapped off two of my self tapping bolts during my install!!!)

I've been supported on big boulders on my RRO Rock Rails just like Clints pic. Don't worry they are tuff enuf.

Its not the easy way, but you don't have to use the self tappers. You can install regular nuts and bolts.

Believe it or not, Any step rail could protect that rocker more even if its just from paint chips from rocks thrown by the tires.
