As far as I can tell, if folks are getting enough in there to be a problem, then there's a lot of air. The injection pump self bleeds on startup:

The cascade overflow valve has two functions:
- Regulation of lubrication fuel to the internal moving parts of the high pressure pump
- Regulation of the fuel pressure being supplied to the fuel quantity solenoid
The cascade valve has a machined center piece that has three drillings. One for overflow, one for lubrication and one for supply. The valve works in three stages based on the pressure entering the inlet of the valve.
Stage 1 When the fuel pressure entering the tip of the cascade valve is between 0 and 3 bar (44 psi), the spring force is not overcome and fuel only flows
through the center drilling. This drilling always allows fuel flow through to the pump center ring and lubricates the pump bushings and internal moving
parts. This circuit also allows air to bleed during initial cranking and returns the air to the fuel tank.
The cascade valve is only in stage one during cranking.

It is a lot of air. Not only is the pump able to some bleed air, but the OEM filter has a dip tube down the center which doesn't allow air to leave the filter until the upper 2/3 of the filter are full of air. Nonetheless, I can tell you from personal experience, you can get enough air to overwhelm the design.

well i put my filter on...

i had planned all day to make sure i had 2 hours of time to do this mod... so come 5pm. i picked up my garage, put my "dirty" clothes on... got on line printed the 9 pages of the instructions, grabed the ups box and headed out...

well.... lets just say i didnt need my "dirty" clothes, nor the 9 pages of "how to" or 2 hours of time... i really do think it took me longer to get ready to do this than it did to do it! so about 30 min later... i was on my couch, witth a cold one! (coke that is :? )

i have to say its $60 very well spent :D

I think I've reached the same point. Only a hint of wetness anywhere but every time I bleed it I get a bunch of air out. How can fuel under pressure not leak out but air get in? BTW,, any ideas for what to use as a sealant? I'm ready to move in that dirrection.

Thanks
Steve

Its not under pressure, its a vacuum system. When bleeding the air after you get fuel close the bleeder and then pump up the filter till it gets hard to pump. As for sealant on the adapter use Blue Loctite or teflon pipe paste No sealer needed on the o-rings.

Ok, I didn't understand it was a vacuum system. If a bunch of us are having air leaks then it's most likely the o-rings not sealing and that's where we're looking for a sealant to help seal. Where else can the air be getting in?

Is it possible that after opening the sytem it takes a few bleed cycles to get everything purged of the air you introduce?

Steve

You might want to replace the o-ring on the center section. Also if you took the banjo fittings loose that can be a source. The 2 we have here work great. Did you grease the o-ring before putting it back together?

there was mention of replacing the gasket between the two parts with the old filter gasket, as it was close to twice as thick. it's somewhere in the fuel heater thread I think. maybe the oem part has compressed / aged enough to be worthless?

The discount would be that we are now free from having to pay Mopar for their overpriced, poor stock 5 micron filter! 8)

I would want to see the manufacture spec on the replacement. I really doubt they are 2 micron. they might fir and look the same but I'm will to bet their not the same inside.

Just as I thought their is a big difference. They are 2 micron nomimal not absolute as the Cat is. So that makes the Wix about 10 absolute.

Greg 2000 mile trip no issues, let me know when you have the cat filters for sale on your website.
I have a spare 751 which is of course a bit longer.

Would it be possible to eliminate the fuel heater? My buddy says that's what you have to do to the similar setup on the 12 valve cummins. Tigafila
