well after the first attempt to get my trans fixed that got side tracked by the rear end needing a rebuild, etc.

I am back at it again. So this is what it does:

once warm ~15 mins of driving, the trans starts to make a percolating noise (think coffee Pot), and it most noticeable around town, doesn't seem to have much effect if i hop on the highway and go for several hours and get off, but around town it starts to make the percolating noise and seems to increase with temperature. Also there seems to be a correlation with the noise and it acting stupid, it has trouble find gears under 30 mph, has even stumbled from rolling starts (~2mph) and not engaged into gear and just hesitated then slam into gear and i am off. also seems to have a bit of a shudder in OD and on the 1-2 shift.

I can feel a pulsing of the percolation through both the t-case lever and the tranny shift lever. My suspicions lead me to think the torque converter is full of junk or broken. It seems against unlocking in certain situations (stop lights, higher speeds) and it stops making the noise when i turn the car off, but it continues for a half a second or so after i switch the ignition off, i think it takes that long for whatever was making the noise to stop spinning, etc.

also on a side note, what signs that someone may have put the wrong fluid type in?

Drink to much coffee in the morning? Maybe you are thinking about coffee to much?

Well if you had the filter changed to one thing that could be wrong is they did not properly seat the filter and seal causing airiation of the fluid that could be causing your noise and other problems. Not much of a way to determine if they did not use ATF+4 unless you have the fluid tested. They may have used ATF+3 with a additive that is suposed to make it ATF+4 but that's just bogus.Go back to the place and make sure they even stock ATF+4.Your really in trouble if they used DEXIII.Just my suggestions.

Oh man, sounds like you might not have the right tansmission fluid. Tires Plus once put in what they *thought* was "Chrysler approved" for the KJ automatic, and the thing downshifted HARD from 3 to 2. Literally shook the whole Jeep. I didn't experience your noises, though, but if you've been driving it a while, your seals me be going. When I told the dealership about my problem, they told me not to drive it at all if I didn't have to. Good luck.

Well, I'm glad that at 50,000 miles, when I bought my KJ, no one had done anything to the Tranny yet.
All the Filters plus a bunch of ATF+4 done by me when purchased, my mind is at ease... oh, wait... I have a 45RFE...

How many miles are on that 42RLE that sounds like a coffee maker?

I have about 53K on mine, its been percolating for about the last 2500.

And yes, i thought about the filter, but i did have it done at a reputable place, took it back to them and they dropped the pan and inspected the filter, checked the flowrate, temperature, etc. And everything seemed to be fine. (thats what they said)

Try a different shop? Having someone fess up to their own mistake is not very easy.

My 42RLE does everything yours does:

Slams into gears
Clunks
Bangs hard on at slow speeds
Binds up
Gear searches on the highway...

But it hasn't broke. :?
