I keep getting these offers from "Dealer Services" (no relation to DC obviously) to sell me an extended warranty. Finally called them today as I'm about to re-register for another year and am going to keep her.

'03 Rennie w/78,000 miles.
So far all she's needed have been a fuel pump and a serp belt besides normal maint items but I do have almost 80K on her.

Anyway, got them on the phone, gave them the mileage and they quoted me $3400 for 4 more years and 60K miles of coverage. After I was undecided they gave me to the "Low Risk" dept (prob the guy at the next desk! )
and quoted me $2700 ($673/yr, $195 down, 18 payments of $139).

Evidently the way it works is if something goes wrong you pay a $100 deduct and they pay the dlr with a "corporate credit card" over the phone.

I told them I'd let them know w/in 24 hrs. (of course they tell you you have to decide immediately or they "remove" you from the offering so someone can't call back after they have a breakdown - whatever. It's obviously part of the sales pressure). I told them no go unless I had 24hrs to decide. :!: Gonna call my dlr and see what they say but I'd like to hear from the forum.

Anyone out there had any experience with this type of thing?? :?:

Personally I'd save the money spent on paying someone to warranty the car and put it in the bank in case something did happen.

Chances are, nothing will but it's always nice to have a cushion of $$ to rely on if you need it.

Don't throw your money away to these people! These warranties are bogus, a scam, rip-off...whatever you want to call them. I to have an '03 Liberty, but with only 68,000 miles, but still in TIP-TOP condition. The way I see it is like this: If you plan on spending MORE money on repairs than the $2700 they want for this crappy warranty, then by all means please hand them your money with a big smile on your face. However if you DO NOT plan on spending that much, which is as much as a brand new engine by the way, why would you bother paying this company for repairs that you don't need or will never be performed? Then on top of it, they want a deductible? Screw that! Not to mention, unless you take it to your lawyer to use his special "attorney magnifying glass", you'll find in the small print that "Gee, sorry sir, that isn't covered in this warranty" when it's too late. If you take care of your Jeep and keep up on the maintenance like your own life depended on it, you shouldn't have many problems past this point. Granted, things wear out and start to leak, but I highly doubt you'll have to pay $2700 in repairs within the next several years. Hope this helps!

Like the other dude said, put the money in a separate bank account for emergency repairs.
Don't give them your money !!!

Sure certain parts, like an engine might only cost 2,700. But at 82.00 an hour, the labor will stack up quick. I think it's a good deal. Any air conditioning, internal engine, or tranny is going to cost that much with labor; at 140,000 miles I doubt your Jeep will be running without replacement parts.

Also, if you decide to sell the Jeep between now and then a warranty on a high mileage car is highly desired.

These warranties do not cover everything if anything they are a scam!! Very hard to get them to cover anything!!! Most likely not transferable either.

Give me a break, a little over the edge with scam? If you have any problems talk to the GM, he'll take care of you. As for transferability, mine is.

Hey Cacher123.....We deal with extended warranties on a daily basis where I work. The only one that I know I would'nt purchase is the "Wynn" warranty. They will only approve inferior parts, and try to tell us how many labor hours they will cover.Go thru DC,as most of their co-partners will work with the dealership closer than another company would.Insurance is like any other purchase you make in that the less you spend on it the less they will work with you. I don't know that 2700.00 is as good a price as you can get,but like Donnie said, the AC system,Transmission,Engine,Any thing to do with water in the electronics, ect.,could very easily cost 2 to 3 thousand in a hurry. So IMO insurance is not really a "Scam"........it's more like a "Necessary Evil". It only seems like a "Scam" because it's something that we all pay dearly for,but hope we'll never need it.    Oh, and by the way......Buying a warranty that is not transferable is a good sign that this company will try to shaft you.

Ron

Um this aftermarket warranty the original poster is refering to has nothing to do with the dealer or chrysler. It is an aftermarket warranty. Going to the GM of the dealer will get you nowhere. Depending on the warranty companies policy it may not be transferable. I dont know, they are all different. If its a dealer backed warranty they're not bad but $2700 is a little steep I'd take my chances. I wouldn't buy one since I work on my own vehicles.

FYI $82hr labor rate is cheap. Go to San Fran where it's $120-$150+ an hr. Find an aftermarket warranty company willing to pay that.

I bought a used Mitsubishi Galant a few years back and an aftermarket warranty was part of the deal. Thank God! A different part fell off that car every week! The warranty was solid. I'd bring it to the Mitsu dealer with 6 problems and they'd fix everything for the $100 deductible. The dealer even gave me a rental. It was good to have when buying used and not knowing what I was getting into, BUT, as others have said, put your money in the bank. You've taken good care of your Libby and hopefully she'll pay you back. If something serious happens, then you'll have the money in the bank and the option to repair or not repair (or find someone who will do it for cheap). If nothing serious happens and four years goes by (the time you would have had the aftermarket warranty), then you can take one kick stupid vacation or put the money towards your next Jeep.

In my experience with extended warranties you'd be better off going with Chrysler rather than a third party. If you do choose to go with this company make sure you have all of your maintenance records, because you're going to need them.

Update:

The best online price I found for a 7yr/100k Maximum Care (top level) warranty for our 2006 CRD was $2080 from http://chryslerservicecontracts.com/ with a $100 deductible. I printed this quote out and went into my local dealer. Not only did they match it, but they took $300 off to help with the state sales tax. I got out the door for $1886. Given the reliability of this CRD so far, I'm sure I'll be saving money in the long run.

If anyone is interested in purchasing a warranty through my local dealer, please PM me. They are a small mom-and-pop dealership run by an older couple. I can check with them if there is any interest.

We got our KJ used at a Toyota dealership. Just happened to be the place that had a good deal. It had 30,000miles on it and about 6,000miles of warranty to go, so we spent something like $1200 for an additional 4 years - 48,000miles on top of factory through an aftermarket provider the dealership partnered with. So far it has paid off for us. We also have free oil changes for the length of the warranty and pay a $0 deductible if we take it to them. Just this last month they've replaced the BCM ($800) and drivers and rear hatch switches ($350). With the free oil changes it's more than paid for itself.

There is a big BUT ...

Buyer beware. I have a friend who now happens to be a mechanic at this dealership. These aftermarket warranty/service contract companies will do just about anything to get out of paying a large claim. Just last week a guy was denied a new engine for his Durango because he didn't have any records of when his SUV was service and how often. Some of these companies will go so far as to send out a claim person to inspect your vehicle to look for any excuse (relevant or not) to turn down your claim. My friend says they'd try to turn down a claim on my tranny if it broke because I modified it by putting on a cooler  Bottom line, still take care of your regular maintenance, do it on time, and keep good records.

Also, one thing I didn't know when I got this contract is that the price is as negotiable as the sticker price on a used car. Do not EVER accept the first price you are quoted.

I bought my Jeep thru Carmax and payed $1500 for 5years 80k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, with a $25 deduct if I use the Carmax service center and $50 if I use a Jeep dlr service. So far its been an ok investment, they replaced the back 2 infinite speakers, and replaced the hood latch release. Just gives you something to compare it to.
