Guys I have priced a GC CRD and base car is only $42,xxx and the one I was looking at was $43,5xx and was nicely equipped, employee price out the door was $38,xxx, but I was not much more comfortable in the GC then the Liberty. I'm just a big guy at 6'5" and 325 lbs and lot of cars just leave me cramped, so I passed on the Jeep.

I just priced a GC, 4X4 with the CDI diesel and added NAV. Price was $45,050. They added at $1500 discount, for a list of $43,050, which was not available several weeks ago. The V6 diesel is a $3700 option on the Limited.

Now, if they had something with the VM Motori V6 being built for GM's new Cadillac, with 250hp/405 ft-lbs tq, compacted iron block (quiet), aluminum heads, 29,000 psi piezo injectors, siemens gp's with integral pressure feedback sensors for realtime feedback to the ECM, they might have something. Timing chains, no belts. More hp/tq than the MB V6 CDI. Pretty good option for a Liberty if they want to sell something diesel besides a GC.

Maybe now that they're free of Daimler, VM Motori diesels will be an option again. If I were going to spring for a high end diesel SUV, if it had a MB motor, I'd go with a MB vehicle. At least it would have a dealership network with parts to repair it.

Just remember that VM is owned by MB and Penske, so I would imagine that dog will hunt elswere like GM as you mentioned.

I bet we will seeing the Cummins V6 & V8 diesels coming to Chrysler since Chrysler has a long history with Cummins diesels in the Dodge PU trucks.

I sat in one a few weeks ago and I was not all that comfortable. I could not get the seat in a spot where I'd be comfortable driving it. My 06 KJ has more leg room.

I would not be too worried about getting an orphan on parts; the 3.0l MB diesel is used in the Mercedes Sedands, SUVs and the 2nd generation Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter Cargo Van.

Not that D and C are split you would not have the option of warranty service at a Mercedes or Freightliner where your odds of finding a diesel tech are much higher.

The market target for a high $40K to $50K SUV is not the kind of individual who would buy their own parts from an MB dealer, then hire someone to diagnose, repair and install these non-warranty parts on a new SUV. That's assuming they don't get sticker shock when they see the MB prices and that the MB dealers will sell them to non MB retail buyers.

For example, one MB tech I knew told me that when a transmission failed in an E320, Daimler insisted that the original transmission be shipped back to them in Germany, untouched and they furnished a reman'd tranny - total time was 3 weeks. His claim was that Daimler Germany didn't want US techs touching that transmission and issued instructions that the transmission was not to be opened up. Whether this was an isolated incident or not, I don't know. It may have been because the vehicle was only a few months old, but the point is that MB has their own way of handling parts/repair work.

That's the issue facing Jeep buyers purchasing a vehicle that has a potential population of 200 - 500 vehicles. Too few to build good dealer diagnosis support and warrantied parts. Look at the delay some of the 11,000 CRD owners faced getting parts as simple as glow plugs, egr valves and torque converters, even before Jeep dropped the CRD option. With the distinct possibility that Chrysler may not be able to get the MB V6 CDI in large numbers, and having just been "kicked to curb" by Daimler, how much motivation is there at Chrysler to invest their limited resources in parts and training on the MB V6 CDI engine?

Well, with all this pessimism, does anyone then expect there to be some very nice deals on CDI GC's this fall, when diesel starts getting expensive again? $42k is tooo much for that Jeep, but at $32 I might bite.

I'd rather keep my CRD. I can't say that the GC would bring anything to the table for me.

I'm new to the community, but a search on autotrader.com quickly brings up a hefty amount of 05 CRDs in the mid to high teens range with varying miles.
I fully hope to pay no more than 17k for an 05 with around 30-40k on the odo. I may have to have it shipped here, but it will still be waaaay cheaper than trying to buy a used one in my area (Seattle, where the highest concentration of biodiesel burners reside.).

Prices for anything diesel and not a big pickup on the West Hippie Belt (Santa Cruz CA to Vancouver BC) are high.

VWs and the old 5 cylinder Mercedes are the most popular for SVO conversions. I've seen several in the past few years in Home Power magazine.

I was not aware the our CRDs got caught up in the hoopla, but it makes sense though.

Pouring gas on the fire the the Communist Air Resources Board has banned light duty diesels so a majority of the population can't get them new.

Nice thing about the 05 is they have a 7/70 power train warranty that can be transfered to the new buyer.

I sold my '00 VW New Bettle over the 'net and the guy flew out to get it and said the amount he saved paid for the trip and the expense of the return trip.

I have said it before and I will say it again...There will not be another vehicle like the Liberty CRD anytime soon! I bought mine for the gas mileage but I would not spend ~$35,000 to get it. As long as we here at LOST find fixes for the problems...I am happy with my CRD.

I will keep mine for at least 10 years unless the ML comes to the US as a 420 CDi.
