Anyone else that filed get one of these yet?

Check it out:

Hi Mike,

Thanks for reporting to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the fuel leak on your 2006 Jeep Liberty.

Could you please further help with the following:

1. Scan and email me a copy of the repair invoice.
2. Take and email me a photo of the location where the fuel leak (fuel filter/heater plug) has occurred.
3. Could you estimate how fast it was leaking (a drop a second, an oz per minute, etc)
4. Was there any kind of warning (dash light, hestitation, loss of power, odor, etc) not counting the engine stall?
5. Do you know of any internet forums with postings on this exact issue? If so, could you email me the links?
6. Do you have the old part? What exactly was the part that failed?

Thanks very much!

I havnt filed or anything

But, WOW, they sure are asking all the right questions! Maybe there is hope yet? A new improved (and hopefully proper working) filter head would be nice. Could prevent a serious fire, or prevent someone from being stranded due to air in the fuel lines.......

Hey MODS!

Why don't you create a "Please Post if your fuel leaks" sticky on the the top of the CRD forum.

It will assist them in finding the information needed without having to dig, afetr all the one on the TC seemed to get DC to do something(not quite enough but sure better than it was...)

This is what mine looked like internally. Unfortunately, it is largely destroyed at this point after I tried to remove the fuel temp sensor.

Recieved the same inquiry for info today. Sounds like they are ready to take a look at this issue.

I just talked to Steve who sent the email and he said right now he only has 4 complaints and he will do a review of all the complaints and then take the study to his managers to try to get them to do a further investigation. So, if you have had this problem, please file so we can get this recalled and get this fixed!!!

How do you file? Is this for the states only? What about Canada?

I just got off the phone with Mr. Steve Chan from the NHTSA regarding the fuel heater leak, which may have caused an injection pump failure in my CRD. He asked me to file a complaint via their web site even though I am a Canuck! He also wants me to send him the failed part for analysis. So, if you have ever had a leak please file a complaint, these folks are looking into this design very closely. Even if you have only been told your fuel heater was replaced by a tech...file a complaint.

Now to see if the diesel guy kept the failed part.

Given your CRD experience I think whatever you wrote was well worth it.

Well I will go ahead and file, my wife has been stranded once due to air in the lines, so it does have a leak, just hasnt become visible yet . I am not one to complain, but with the possibilites of a fire, being stranded, and perhaps slowly killing my injection pump......I think it is time.

I sure am glad this is being looked into, and if I have to replace a filter head I will do it myself, that way I will have the bad part in hand.

hey Dharv, is the above link for filing a claim? I'll do one based on my two limp mode events, maybe we can get the european fuel filter out of DCX, sounds like it is the marine type offered from RACOR.

sorry, self explanatory.
I'm going to file based on the limp modes I have had and the great information found here, I suggest everyone who has had this problem file as well,
MODERATORS; maybe a sticky?
don't mean to hijack this forum, but if there is a valid problem and as a group we can get some satisfaction, lets do it! :D

I'm not sure that we are not mixing apples and oranges here folks. If we are filing when we don't have a fuel leak I am not sure that the NHTAS is going to consider it the same issue. If they are of course that would be great as they will get a whole lot more filings, me among them.

Good point, I will make sure there is an actual leak in the filter head. I will press the plunger till its stiff, not excessive though, pull the electrical plugs and look for wetness, I just figured if air is getting in the fuel could get out, just need to find out for sure where it is coming from.
