All,

My wife and I have decided to make the trek - Greenville, SC to Moab, UT (slightly less than 2000 miles one way). I have a 06 CRD and a Fleetwood Bayside in tow. Our plans are to see the country - especially Moab. This thread is kinda my first bit of online research. I figure the best place to get advice is from the folks that live there. I'm going to start off with three questions:

1) What would be the best time of year to visit? Spring? May?
2) How should I prepare my KJ for the maximum wheeling and site seeing?
3) Where are the best campsites? Places to wheel? Photo opportunity?

Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go in Spring. It is too hot from May through September.

Go in late April when LOST holds it's annual LOST international event there in Moab 2008. You can meet a bunch of LOST members and explore some great trails (even if you are stock) while seeing some great sites most "tourists" don't get to see.

Prepare for Maximum wheeling and siteseeing?
1. Get Skid plates
2. Get Sliders/Rock Rails/Boulder Bars
3. Lift it 2.5"
4. Get 31" AT's or MT's
5. Fire Extinguisher
6. Take tools with you
7. Take important fluids (for the Jeep) with you
8. First Aid Kit
9. Go to Moab during LOST's International event
10. Take Spare parts of things that can break most frequently when hitting trails or just out on the road.
11. Install a CB Radio (and antenna, of course)
12. Do trails with another vehicle

Pretty much all trails in Moab are great for photo ops. Top of the World is a great trail, Chicken Corners, Poison Spider Mesa are a few.
OK Campgrounds is great for LOST over the last few years.

Thanks Tokyo. As far as lift goes I am thinking 2" spacers and Rancho are the way I'm going to go and for tires, 215/85R16 ATs. Sound good?

215's are good for mud but will hinder you on the rocks,and if you want to do MOAB trails I'd be looking at at least 245's(if lifting).215's will have real problems when you air then down,not wide enough to to keep the tread area somewhat flat at aired down pressures.Plus getting a good MT or AT tire in that size would be hard to find and probally pretty pricy(if you can find any good one's).

Another question for ya, its OK to bring my dog with me on the trails at Moab, right?

Yes, you can bring your dog with you, saw many dogs last year and year before.

One guy made his dog tag along (breathing in all of the dust) while he was in his CJ on Kane Creek Canyon trail a couple of years ago.
