ALCON: Looking to purchase a new air intake system for '04 KJ. I've noticed that with the larger tires, the vehicle sleems sluggish. I don't drive fast, but I do like to go off-roading. What do you say is the best fit? If this thread already exists, please post hyperlink. Thanks! :D

The easiest and very good would be the new AMSOIL EaA201 drop in air filter...

The best might be the Snorkel from DPGOffRoad...with the AMSOIL Ea filter...

Too be completely honest, and I hate to bust your bubble, but an intake won't help.

The problem is the tires. When I switched to my 245/75s I lost a ton of power. It was only after I swapped gears to 4.10s instead of 3.73s that I got some of it back.

regular drop in filter from K&N didn't help. AEM Brute Force intake pipe helped a little, but not really enough to justify the money it cost. High-flow cat helped a little as well.

Nothing helped enough to notice until I did the gear swap :(

I have a K&N FIPK w/ Amsoil Ea cone filter on it in one of my KJ's and it feels like it makes Less lowend power than my stock air box w/ drop in Amsoil Ea series filter. Top end feels about the same between them both. I am not sold on any air intake assy's for the KJ. I don't think they really make any more power than the stock setup especially at low end where you really need it and for the price they are not worth it.

I really hate to say that JJsKJ is right   but he is! I do like to get him into a good discussion every now and again. BUT After running a Rustys air tube and a K&N for almost 70,000 miles I went back to the stock box with a hose running out to the grill and am getting better mileage now than before! Only thing I do not have the sound that the K&N made anymore but the stock box is better and save your money for other things!

What they said. Just drop in the AMSOIL and run some sort of hose or tube from the stock air box out to the grill. Replace your throttle body with with a Fastman throttle body. This will give you the best results for the money. With the bigger tires, 4.10's will help a lot too.

However, to actually answer your question

What's the best air intake system for KJ?

But of course, my opinion is biased.

simple answer
you changed the final drive ratio of your drive train when you installed the larger tires
like others have said there is no real "bolt on" fix you can do 1 of 2 things
1) live with it
2) regear

I have made the choice to simply live with it for now

IronMedic2,

I believe that your answer is the tires.

I remeber seeing a post in here somewhere about re-setting the computer to know you have larger tires. The larger tires throw off the speedometer and the tranny and it's shift points. A simple re-program will tell the comp that the tires are bigger and make all run better. If i remeber correctly.

PM for tjkj2002 and ask him about it i think he was on that other post. If not he may be able to point you in the better direction

Thanks for the input everybody...appreciate all the input. BREAK:

KY liberty, I read on Wikibooks that Fastman's throttlebody is a good improvement over stock, however throttle body spacers should be avoided as they provide no performance increase when installed on the KJ.

Would you echo that?

Also...the price I see on the fastman website is $180 + $100 Core + $10 shipping...290$ Does this cost justify itself in improved MPG???

i've only heard bad things about TB spacers.. Air intakes on the other hand DO help... i have a full K&N cold air intake and a flowmaster muffler and together they gained me about 4 mpg. it runs a ton better too.. rev's much faster and is much powerful on the lower in of the rev-range. the tires do take it down.. im running 32's (265/75/16's) and my KJ is still about as fast if not faster than a stock liberty.. although mine's a 6 speed.. but still. plus im getting around 16-18 mpg which is close to stock. 4.10's will give you more power but lower your gas mileage.... just supercharge it and have the best of both worlds

You get the core charge refunded if you send your old throttle body back. Only ends up costing about $200 that way. It gives a noticeable performance increase, and the throttle response is better. As for better milage, it didn't make a noticeable difference on mine. However, even with the 4.10's, I actually average about 24 mpg at about 55-60 mph. At around 70 mph, it drops to about 20 mpg. I average about 14 mpg in town, but if I get on the skinny pedal way too much it can drop below 10 mpg.

IronMedic2 -

I also currently run 245s on my KJ and experience the same slower acceleration than my brother's stock KJ.

This is usually (mostly) due to the gearing. Your KJ was designed and assembled to run optimally with stock size tires. Increasing the size of your tires will cause your your Jeep to accelerate slower, but also allow it cruise at faster speeds with lower RPMs (kind of like the "harder" gear on your old 10-speed bike, hard to accelerate but you can go fast easily). The most cost-effective way to truely address this is by replacing your ring and pinion gears with a ring and pinion gear with a higher (bigger number) ratio.

However 245s are not really that much larger than stock, so I do not recommend that you go through the time, effort, and money of replacing your R&P gears. My KJ came from the factory with 3.73 ratio ring and pinion gears. It is not worth the money to change the gears out for my current 245s. I consider it just part of the price of having a slightly larger tire, not a big deal. However, once I upgrade to 265 tires, I will replace my 3.73 R&P gears with 4.10s.

As for the filter...

The primary reason to upgrade your filter is to gain better filtration to get cleaner air into your engine. This, combined with several other measures (like using quality synthetic oil, quality oil filter, regular oil changes, etc) will prolong the life of your engine. This should be your primary motivation for upgrading your filter.

Do not believe the hype about added power just from a filter. In fact, don't even count on ANY horse power increase from any filter. If you get any, just consider it a nice bonus.

I recommend a dry-cell synthetic filter such as AEM (that's what I selected after a lot of research). It is easy to install, clean and is re-usable. It filters the air great. The real measure of filtration is how well a filter continues to filter the air ONCE THE FILTER IS DIRTY.

That is my 2 cents, or buck fifty.

Good luck in 4th ID. I was in 720 MP BN at Ft Hood 1998-2000. Lived in an apartment complex off of Trimmier Rd. Drove my 83 CJ7 as my daily driver back then.

Ivan.
