Well Danoid, ya got some of it right. Having just finished reading the whole thread it seems like Suncoast has come up with the correct solutions and I will probably upgrade to their solution.

I have done several shift kits and all have improved the shift quality and life of the transmissions. My last tranny was built for 650 hp and we fine tuned it with the computer and it came in very well. A stock tranny wouldn't have responded as well as the difference in accumulator fill times is directly related to spring pressure and line orfice size. The shift kit varied these to a more optimal, for the transmission not the ride, value to have the transmission perform properly.

Snake Oil, that term is used by those that want to but haven't actually done anything!

Have you gentlemen with the Suncoast converters noticed any increase in mileage?

I am seeing a decrease in mileage. Around town I can see because of the much better feel and peace of mind I am driving more like its stolen. But at 75 on the highway I am about 1-2 mpg less(???). Thought it could be the fuel. Will keep watching it. I will be putting 4-5000 miles on it over a 2 week vacation westward. Will give more feedback after that.

Im not hearing what i wanted to hear about this upgrade. I will continue to hold out to persue replacing the whole stinkin thing (tranny) w/ somthing custom. $$$ == ouch tho =(

I simply (and again IMHO) do NOT like the tranny in my CRD in any way shape or form other than it works and that beats having a broken one hands down =) I have a bias towards the torque flite w/ the over/under mod (aka all dodge trannys). But i knew what i was getting into when i bought it so i try not to complain too much (no one to blame but me i guess).

I like the feel of those tight little foreign jobs like toyota/nissan/honda their auto trannys always felt responsive and solid. Not sure if i can ever make that happen w/ this vehicle but i can dream....

Yeah, but for some reason, the manual won't tow as much. Wonder why??

Jeep is back - I've driven about 2 miles in traffic so far, I can feel the difference the TC makes and that's good - and I'm waiting on the adaptive learning to calm down the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts - feels like I'm powershifting without the clutch.....

FYI - I could not find any shops with exerience on Liberty's - much less CRD's - everything's new enough that almost all service has been warranty.
So I took it to an independant Jeep shop. I mentioned the ATF-4 and they said no problem we've got it under control. So when I picked it up and as Pablo said - check the receipt it has ATF-3, I asked and they said 'oh it's a multi- purpose works for everything' - but just to humor me they called their supplier to verify... the guy's faced dropped a lot as he hung up and said they'd give me a Rental while they flushed and refilled the transmission......

Torque converters can handle more abuse than clutches, assuming a good design and extra cooling to get rid of the heat.

Definitely hold out for the ATF +4. It's more expensive, but lasts much longer than the +3.

Anyone here considered replacing the auto tranny with a manual? OUS OEM or otherwise?

It's in the service manual as ATF-4 only, so as soon as they realized that the multi-purpose was wrong - they didn't bat an eye about changing it - it's a good shop they just haven't dealt with a CRD before.

Shifts are getting better on the drive home - need to put some more miles on it.

I would not mind swapping in a manual if parts were were easy to get to do a complete swap.

It's not just a CRD. Every Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge for the past five years has been ATF +4.

Right on Mitch. It's nice isn't it?

Did you watch Bruce change out that crap and install the TransGo shift kit and lever? Talk about junk!

Didn't get the chance to watch. Bruce has been busy of late, had to drop it off yesterday and they had it done this afternoon.

Bruce said that since word of his skills have hit the internet after doing the first Suncoast-ectomy, he's been getting quite a few calls from the local diesel pickup crowd - Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins - wanting him to install aftermarket TC's in their vehicles. Looks like a really good tranny shop is hard to find!

Smooth as glass at 70 mph. Can't even feel it shift or go into lockup. Will accelerate with authority with less than 2000 rpm. Goose it up to 2300 rpm on takeoff and you best be holding on. 45 mph steady state cruise it's only turning 1600 rpm. You hear a deeper growl from the engine on normal takeoff, you can tell it's connected and loaded down. No vibration while driving or sitting at idle, you can even hold your hand on the gear selector and not feel anything. I also noticed there's no more "shutdown shake" when you turn off the engine - it just shuts off.

For $1800, I ended up with a brand new vehicle!

Wow that sounds great. I'm going to do the shift kit and suncoast after I'm done shipping ORM Kits in a few weeks. I have already been through 3 stock TC's and 2 front pumps. Do you think I'm ok just getting the convertor and shift kit or should they do the front pump again?

Depends on whether or not they gave you the new design front pump already. If they have, then just the TC and shift kit should be good.

If you've still got the paperwork from the last time they swapped pumps, see if it lists the part number. If it starts with a 68, you've already got the new design pump. If you do, and once it's opened up the tranny shop doesn't find anything to suggest that the pump may have been damaged in the interim, then it should be just the TC and shift kit.

Does anyone know if the gasser KJ uses the same auto tranny? Might the manual tranny fit into our CRD? Hmmm
