Operation Order Snorkel

Hey everyone Dirk at DPG is still waiting for more snorkel orders. Here is what he had to say:

Hey gang,
Here's the latest. Sorry for the delay. Went on vacation and lost track of a few things.
Something must be wrong with my cookies or something, because I've received absolutely no e-mail notificatons to any of the snorkel posts at all. I thought the topic had just gone completely dead.
I was also under the impression that the snorkel buy would be made a sticky, but I guess it wasn't, so it kept getting buried down the line.

The snorkels have not been ordered yet.
We really needed a minimum of 15-20 orders to get things done in the original timeframe. I didn't post that in the original buy-in post. I never gave that any thought, as I've received SO MANY e-mails over the last couple of years from guys saying they would buy this snorkel as soon as it came out. I just figured 15-20 orders would be easy, based on that.
The buy-in discount was also based on that.

We ended up with 5 orders on the buy-in.

Here's where we stand- I WILL still honor the buy-in price for those who stepped up. The only change in plan is that the snorkels will take a good deal longer than originally planned.
Of course, no one has been charged a dime. I will NOT run anyone's credit card until the snorkels are actually ordered.
We have to order a large quantity of snorkels from Australia to spread the shipping costs out enough to make it worth while.
We cannot order a couple of snorkels here and there, as the shipping costs are astronomical and would drive the price way up!

BTW- the cost for this snorkel is not high compared to other vehicles- a safari snorkel for a late model XJ runs over $500.00 at MAP price! An older XJ safari unit runs $362.00 at MAP pricing. The snorkel for the KJ is a higher level snorkle than the XJ units and the cost level is definitely higher.

Because of the level of interest shown, I won't likely be ordering as many extra KJ units as originally planned for our stock. That means that there will be some guys who decided to wait & "see how it goes" who will want to order a snorkel later and may not be able to get one for a longer time. I can't justify tying up thousands of dollars to stock a bunch of units that won't move.
That's why we did the buy-in- to get a good idea how the market would look and to cover some our costs on a chunk of the order.

If you ordered a snorkel already, you WILL get one!
If you've changed your mind and do not want it, you need to let me know and I'll be glad to cancel it.
If you'd like to be sure and get a snorkel on the first shipment, you can still order one- It won't be at the buy-in price, but at least you can know one will be reserved for you on the first shipment.

It's a tough thing, as we can only order snorkels once or twice a year due to demand and quantities needed to make an order. Hopefully this makes things a little clearer as to what's going on.

I am still good to go... unless they come out with the donaldson filter snorkel... then I want that. I will call and let him know tomorrow.

Hmmmm. I am finding Safari snorkels for Land Rovers and other vehicles under $300, online.

Since I don't have the stock air box anymore a snorkel would only be eye candy on my KJ.Plus a snorkel will actually decrease power,the incoming air has to go through to many bends before the intake,sure it will be cleaner but that's it.Also to all that think that just adding a snorkel and you can go through deeper water you are wrong,not even just extending the breathers will help.To truely be able to go through deeper water saftely,you need a deep water fording kit,it uses the engines pressure to pressurize all the other components in your vehicle,so a new selectable style PCV will have to modified to fit the engine.Then all the breather tubes need to be attached to it,also you'll need to make breathers for the PS pump,steering rack.When activated it will send the crankcase pressure to all the diffs,tranny,t-case and such to pressurize them so water can't get in.Then you need to cut all the factory wire connectors off and replace them with water proof connectors.Then you need to either water proof everything in the cabin or make the cabin water tight.It's a very labor intensive process and cost alot of money.

So in short these $350+ snorkels are just going to hurt mpg's and performance and are only eye candy in my opinion.

Regardless, this is still a buy-in, perhaps not at the original price (doesn't matter, because I don't know that price either), but there is still a buy-in price...

I put a safari snorkel on my YJ years ago and I could go through water part way up the windsheild with no problems. Alls I did was put the snorkel on. Everytime there after, I changed the fluids, and never noticed any water.

I also siliconed the dizzy cap. The ONLY problem I had was the alternator would occasionally, not work.

But I do beleive YJ's are different in their manufacture, compared to a KJ. Ones meant for off-road. The other (off the factory floor) is trail rated.

actually your wrong about hurting MPG's

b4 snork with 245/75R16 mudders and roof basket on the highway i would use 17.5 liters per 100 kilomerters , now with snork same setup i use 14.9 liters per hundred kilometers and that was calculated over a trip of 2000 kilometers there and back

have gained a consistant 2 1/2 Liters per 100 kilometers back on the milage

in both highway and city driving , you get and this is a calculated figure a MINIMUM of 140% more air flow than stock at 60 KPH which is where the ram air effect of the snork takes over

OK i went from 16.14 mpg to 19.15 mpg on snork alone

i used 91 octane fuel, 2 adults 2 kids and assorted crap in the back

that was before the Magnaflow went on and had a pinion reset done

OZLTD has also found he has gained economy back with his CRD as well

Yey,but you have a turbo,forced induction engines are a different ball of wax compared to a naturally asperatied engines when dealing with intake mods.Here in CO alot of poeple have removed there snorkels from TJ's and XJ's due to the loss of MPG's,no forced air induction when going 2mph crawling on the rocks.

not a crd and the pick up, throttle response and economy gains has been noticeable

I'm not sure why you think a snorkel would decrease power. It allows (forces) more air into the engine... It doesn't get any better than that! Also, you don't get forced induction from any air delivery method when you're crawling at 2mph...

Replace the wiring with some tinned marine cable, soldered joints, and adhesive heat shrink. Then pack the factory connectors with dielectric grease. :twisted:
