Well, the 'ol kj developed a new sound after wheeling a couple weeks ago. When I put the transmission in reverse, there is a constant "clunky" sound. It sounds like something vibrating or rotating and hitting something because it is a constant sound. This happens when I sit with the brake pedal down and also when I move backwards. I'm in 2wd a the time, and have not tried in 4wd. It also makes the sound briefly when I start up and shut down the engine. Is this just my exhaust hitting something again?

I havent had a chance to get under there while someone holds the brake yet, I was just wondering if anyone had experience with something similar.

If you have a tranny skid it may just be the exhuast hitting it,I took a rather hard hit on my tranny skid in MOAB and bent the skid so my Y-pipe was vibrating on the skid, rather annoying.

I had that problem before until I pounded it out. It may have just moved up again.

I have a similar noise when in accelerating in reverse and my tranny skid isn't touching the exhaust at all... ideas?

If you only get the noise while you're actually moving in reverse it's probably you're rear differential. Does it sound like it comes from the back, kind of a grind? I had mine make noise when I was doing what the dealer described as "parking lot maneuvers". They changed the fluid and put in 2 bottles of limited slip additive and the noise went away.

jerbacher, I'm stumped. Sure hope it's just the exhaust rattling around.

I get the sound when I'm sitting with the tranny in R and my foot on the brake too, which makes me think it's just something rattling around. No drivetrain components should be moving at that time, I think.

Well, I took a look. It's the exhaust. Theres pretty solid contact between the pipe and the skid. I guess it must have gotten bent up some on the last run. I've already pounded it out once though, so I'm not sure what is going to have to be done. Sounds like the BFH is going to get a bit more work soon! :D
