Summary of tires sizes and mods required to fit them

Howdy,
I am getting ready to install my frankenlift and replace tires. I don't want to do any trimming, and I don't particularly want to pound down the pinch weld if I can avoid it. Does the table above accurately summarize my size choices?

So, I can get any of the following and with a lift I won't need additional mods (pinchweld or fender trimming).

I have 245/75-16 MT/R and I have to pound down the pinch weld *and* trim the wheel well liner.

When I had the Liberty, I had the Rusty's coil lift with 245/75r16 Goodyear MT/R's on stock 7 inch wheels and didn't have to pound the pinch weld or trim anything. Over time the passenger side of the bumper where it meets the fender came loose (too much stuffing) and the tire started grinding away the fog light door. That was the only issue I had after 12,00 miles on the lift.

Same with 265/75R16 MT/R's,no greater than 4" BS on the rims though.

tread width is the width figure that is important, some of those tires really balloon out and have a skinnier than expected tread.

my 225/70s' tread width is almost 7 3/4"" and the stock 235/70s are only 7.2", misleading. the diameter is almost exactly the same, just a tad shorter.

No, but 235/85r16 Dayton Timberline MT's are a blast! Those would be a bit smaller all around, and might work out well.

Nice list, but I thought the OME lifts also allowed you to run 245/75s.

You would probably have to trim with the OME lift and those tires.. I had 255/70/16 tires on rims with 5" BS and it rubbed kinda bad. The rear fenders would of come off without extended bumpstops.

That chart is awesome and much-needed.

You might also want to add the actual dimensions PER-TIRE for any given size, especially including tread width (as opposed to section width). They often vary a lot by make and model even with the same spec size.

Anyone have fitment data on Firestone Destination MT in a 265/75/16 (Load Range D)? I'm interested in running those on the stock rims after installing a Frankenlift II CRD. I have no problem trimming or pounding. I draw the line at Sawzall-ing the fenders (at least on this KJ).

Here's the specs if anyone has a comparable tire:
Load: 3000lbs
Weight: 47lbs
Diameter: 31.9"
Section width: 10.5"
Tread width: 8.2"
Tread depth: 19/32"

235/75R16 is a stock OEM tire size for some KJs. My '03 came with Goodyear SR-A's in that size. I honestly think that almost all tires in that size will fit unlifted Liberties with no rubbing at all. It's also the tire size I would go with if you have a 2.5" lift and want absolutely zero rubbing without having to trim or bumpstop anything.

OPINIONATED RANT BEGINNING NOW:
Nothing against those that have skinnier tires, like 235/85R16 and 215/85R16, but I've been told repeatedly by MANY experienced offroaders that the key to good traction is having tires with a wide footprint (tread width). This is just an OPINION that I'm beginning to believe is probably true.
I wanted to go with the 235/85 size more than once, simply because it's almost a 32" tire and the skinnier width would give you less rubbing than say, a 265/75 tire, in theory. But twice now, when I'm getting new shoes on the KJ, I try to go with the 235/85s, and the tire guys give me a little "you don't want to do this" talk (note: these are not the "experienced offroaders" I mentioned earlier :roll:

). They both talked about tread width being the most important thing on and off-road. Then they yapped about what little height gain and additional clearance I get from going from 245/75 to 235/85, and that I lose more than I would want in tread width from that change. They always talk me into getting the 245/75R16...they are good salesmen, but they are also my good friends in both instances so I listened up, also remembering the how-many-times I've heard other people tell me how my 31s are as good as it gets until I can fit 265/75s under there.

Okay, so here is my experience....

With my 2.5 inch Rustys spring lift and 245/75/16 BFG KOs I had to do NO trimming. I did however have very light rubbing on the fog light doors at full lock. Other than that it was a great set up and provided no head aches like my new tires have....but the headaches are worth it in my opinion :wink:

From what I understand the largest tires that came on the KJ from the manufacturer was the 235/70/16 not 235/75/16(anyone correct me if iam wrong).And you are right the 235/75/16's will fit under a KJ without a lift no problems of rubbing at all, *so the chart should be changed since it is a useful tool for those choosing tire sizes/lifts.*
