I bought a fire extinguisher for the KJ & have mounted it in the back on the luggage barrier. Has anyone else put in there KJ, perhaps in a better position. I used 4 cable ties & it wont budge :D , and as I wasn't sure where to bolt it I put it there. If you have any ideas of a better spot or where I can safetly bolt it + pic's of your set up, that would be great.

On another note while putting this in, my wife bought me a compass for the dash board. It wouldn't work, always said I was heading south (funny that). The only place it gives a real reading is mounted to the sealing on the light up front. Very strange, must be to do with the engine or something.

don't really have any experience in mounting one in a KJ but I wouldn't think that would be the best spot for it. What if you need to get to it quick you have to get out and go all the way around to get it. What if your backed up somewhere that for some reason you can't get the gate open? Then what do you do?

I don't know how big your extinguisher is but there's a small space under the drivers side seat will it fit there?

I'm sure in most normal situations you'll never need it or maybe helping someone else out or it's not a life threatning fire and you've got plenty of time to get it, but for that ONE time that you really have to have it and you can't get to it I'd hate for it to be unaccesible.

Good point pokefan, I was just thinking of where to put it so my kids couldn't get to it. What do you know about drilling into the floor or the KJ. Do you use a self tapper or would it be best with a nut & bolt setup.

Well, what I did was put it under the passenger seat. It is not very high tech, but here is what I did:

Also, I contacted RAM mounts, since they have a mount for everything except a fire extinguisher and asked them what they would do. They sent me this:

I haven't looked I have a Mag light mounted on the panel just left of the emergecy brake but I would check out left of the streering wheel on the lower panel if you going to carry a fire extinguisher then just like a GUN if you can't grab it quick in an emergecy it's like a rubber with a whole in it WORTHLESS. Keep this in mind with any emergency gear If you can't get to it fast don't bother. Sad but true

Get to it quick...

I can get to it pretty quick, just reach over and a good hard yank and it will come off. I would like to have it on the drivers side so it would be even quicker, but I will not put it anywhere on that side until I get a bullet-proof mounting system. A fire-extinguisher is a good idea, but a fire extinguisher underneath my brake pedal is a bad idea, so for now it stays on the passenger side.

I couldn't get mine to fit under the driver's seat because of the elec motors but, it fit under the passenger seat pretty well...

A word of experanced caution
DO NOT mount a fire extinguisher where it can get hit by direct sun light or get very hot
I know that it sounds funny saying dont get a fire extinguisher hot but here is what happened to me

I am required ,or was until this happened, to carry an extinguisher in my work truck
it does not have tinted glass and has gotten so hot that it broke the glass on a small level
well I had my extinguisher mounted to the side of the seat the truck sat parked out in the open for a weekend then on monday when I was driving down the highway it started to discharge wich is not good when you ar doing 80 on some back country highway and can not breath or see I found my self nearly on my side in a dich and had to climb out on the passenger side of the truck
with no cell service I had to hich to a gas station and call a tow truck from there wich then had to call a bigger truck to get my truck out of the dich all over a stupid extinguisher
I have it mounted in the tool box now and should the POS truck cach on fire I plan to get out and let it burn

I also dont carry one in the TJ or the KJ so dont ask
I carry water and there is always mud or dirt near by to throw on it

This looks good, probably faster than where mine is now. I will re-think it tonight.

Regarding your compass, if you have one of those wheel magnates in your glove box it might be throwing off the reading? Mine was missing when I bought the jeep but I've heard it's about as powerful as a speaker magnate.

I had a difficult time finding a spot for a compass. You have to get it as far from surrounding metal and speakers as possible. I found a suitable spot, I mounted it on 3M velcro low on the windshield right in the middle. It reads acurately until I turn on the wipers, then it will swing slightly with the wiper motion.

That's a good spot, I will probably move mine there when my son rip's it from it's currnet spot. Mine has a blue led light in it & he loves to turn it on & flip it up hard against the roof , the trick is to buckle him up 1st.

Moved it up front between the drivers seat mount's & the drivers door. I screwed the base of the mount into the plastic on the side where the door closes & used 2 screws & liquid nails into the carpet on the floor. Seems tight enough to me.
