:?: Hello. I am the proud owner of a 2002 KJ. This is my first 4WD and my first JEEP. I am extremely exited to have found this site. Thank y'all for this wonderful site. Now on to the question. I have only had my Liberty for a couple of weeks now. I have, just today, been given a full set (4) of Goodyear Wrangler AT/S LT265/75R16. Will these fit on my KJ without a lift, and if not what is the best, inexpensive lift? Thanks.

You have some work to do to fit those bad boys. Lift 2.5" min, flatten the pinch wield, new rims (less back space / more offset) or wheel spacers. Remove or trim the front stock bumper bar (replace with a bull bar), trim & or remove the wheel well lining. The lads that have them will probably chime in & be more specific but that's what I've had to do to run my 265 / 70 /16's STT's. Good luck with it. :D

Here we go again! First thing no the tires WILL NOT fit as CDKj stated and those are the tallest basically that you can run with a lot of work. As far as an inexpensive lift, you get what you pay for but expect to spend at least 500 for any kind of decent spring lift.

Or, you could buy new tires in 245/70-16's or 225/75's, new shocks, skids, rock-rails, front reciever hitch, and a 5K winch & go more places than the average lifted KJ's do.

Remember, lifting this thing to get any real advantage is a step above a JOKE or they wouldn't be doing this:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=73

Only a PITIFUL inch in ground clearance between the 225/75 and the 265/75 with a BUNCH of money spent

:x :x :x :x :x :x I smell fire

This chart is not gospel...but it will give you a good idea of what will and won't work.

Guys and Gals, Keep the answers friendly...you were all noobies at some point 8)

From another thread...235/75/16s seem to fit a stock KJ at ~29.8"

...bought 5 new Hercules Terra Trac AT 235/75/16s for $550.00 ($470.00 net )(mounted/balanced/tax/ect.). They also come with a road hazzard warranty...free replacement first 10,000 miles if they can't be fixed...prorated after that. 50,000 miles/500AB rating. I am going to mount them up Monday and see if I have any fitment problems...29.82" tall. I think they will be fine on road and I will add a lift in a month or two...OME 2" from AllJs.

The other 235/75/16 AT that I looked at seriously was the Toyo Open Country AT:

i have the open country's on my f150 4x4, those are a good tire.

just got the 265/75/r16 firestone destination at's installed this weekend.

absolutely no rubbing issues when turing full lock either way, and no rubbing anywhere else.

will have pics tomorrow.

You may want to mention the mods you've done to make that possible...

DarbyWalters,
could you post a pictures of your terras on your jeep?

I was trying to pick one among Yoko Geolandar A/T-S, Cooper Discoverer ATR, and Hercules Terra Tracs.

Or I will cave and get goodyear triple treads..

Thank y'all very much for your answers. That was extremely informative. Although, that does seem like a lot of work just to make these fit. I think I'll check out other possibilities. Like I said, i'm still very new to all of this and I don't want to go nuts. This tire deal is just really hard to pass up. Thanks again.

I keep hearing talk of how 245s tend to be the biggest you can run without a lift. I put 255/70R16s on my stock libby and had VERY minimal rubbing issues even at full lock. I only now have had any problem with rubbing since I put on the ARB bumper (which will be solved with my Rusty's coil lift). Now my KJ manufacture date is April of 2001. Is this the reason I have had so few rubbing problems? If that is the case, with the 2.5" coil, and the conduit nut (6) and rear isolator add-on (2 per side), just how tall a lift am I looking at, comparatively?? What size tires might fit without rubbing? My thanks out to all you experts in advance.....

i have 4 washers on the front, 2 additional isolators on the rear.

have about 3" of lift and have 265/75/r16 destination a/t's with no rubbing at all.

you can expect to be able to run this tire with minimal rubbing, but its about as big as you can go.

medic9402 you better go with something stronger in the front instaed of Rustys springs , they will droop after a while. Get the OME Heavy Dutys with the lift and be ready to go.
Since yours is a 2002 of course you sat higher due to the springs on them thats why you were able to fit the 255s but if someone with a later model tried that they would have problems. Whatever springs you use it will be the same then as if it was a 2002 or 2006, you are taking away what made it higher in the first place.

I was able to run some 255/70R/16s on my non-lifted Jeep with minimal rubbing at full tilt. Any incline, however did cause rubbing. I currently have 245/75R 16s with no rubbing at full tilt. FWIW, my Jeep goes about anywhere.

Well, I think I'll just try to sell these and get a set of 235's. I feel pretty safe with that and I won't have a lot of modifying to do. Thanks again for all the great imput.

265 and 255 are the width of the tire, how does lifting the KJ up will affect the width of the tire that you can put on it?

A 255 70 16 is approx. 30.2 inches tall and 10.2 section width
A 265 70 16 is approx. 30.7 inches tall and a 10.7 section width
but then you can get into 75 series which are taller but more narrow etc thats why say a 245 75 16 is taller at 30.6 than a 245 70 16 at 29.6
help any or confuse more?

Tom

Is anyone on this topic running 16x8 on his KJ with 245/70/16s? I am sick of looking for good 17 tires, I might just go down to 16s.
