Hey,
Today I went to park and turned the key but it wouldn't turn enough to allow it to come out. I also noticed that I no longer have to have my foot on the brake to shift out of PARK and I no longer have to hold the button on the shifter to go from DRIVE to 2 or 1 or from NEUTRAL to REVERSE. Any ideas as to what this could be? I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow for a recall fix and will have them look at that to but thought maybe it was something easy that I could fix on my own. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Corbin

i do know that the key and the shifter have an interlock so that if you are in d, the key cannot be removed from the ignition cylinder. but you were in park so my guess is that the interlock is somehow shot... i dont know how an interlock gets shot, lol. sounds like a dealer problem unless someone had this and fixed it!

Yep the shift interlock cable is most likely at fault.Take it to the dealer if you still have warrenty left.

ok thanks for the help. I will let the dealer take care of it. I have plenty of warrenty left I just hope they don't tell me its not covered or something because I can't really afford too much since I just dropped almost a grand for tires.

Thanks again,

Corbin

If they dont cover it then leave it there. They have no reason not to cover it unless you packed something back into the key hole.

No I didn't do that so they better fix it. The dealership I go to is actually pretty good but you never no when they will try and screw you over.

I had a recall on my KJ right after I bought it that sounds a lot like what is happening to you. Something about the "shift park pall(?)" iirc. Not sure if yours would be early enough in '06 to be under that same recall or not but, you may inquire at the dealer, just to be safe. Either way, what you're describing is an unsafe condition and IMHO, Chrysler (can I call them that again, yet?) should be responsible for it.

the bumper to bumper warranty should cover anything that is not considered normal wear and tear on the vehicle.

This happened to my g-friend's old Escort. . It could be the shifter or the cable it’s self. On hers it was the shifter. It was a simple fix, after a trip to the junk yard for a "new" shifter it was all taken care of

In a pinch if you really need to remove the key you can pop off the PRNDL [Park, Reverse, etc] bezel and try pulling on the BTSI [Brake, Transmission Shifter Interlock] cable. That should allow you to remove your key from the ignition

Well I had it at the dealer today and they called me and said that they would have to order a new shifter and a shift interlock cable and it would be another day before I get it back. It sucks but at least they said it is under waranty so I don't have to spend anymore to fix stupid things that break. Thanks for all the help and hopefully I won't have anymore problems.

Glad to hear they're fixing it. Should it happen again or to anyone else make sure you set the parking brake. The recal was for a problem of the car coming out of park and rolling away.

Where'd I park my car again?
