When I was a IH farm equipment Service rep many years ago 25% of the dealers I called on had great service. The rest had less than great service, I suspect Jeep dealers are the same. Diagnosing a problem with an engine and depending upon codes is like taking a test after having a lobotomy. A good tech will get as much out of driving the car as hooking up the scanner. Components that feed information to the ECU that generates the codes can lie just like our elected officials or News Media. The ECU can not tell when it is being lied to like a good technician can.
When I had my own shop, I used to get cars that were hooked up to code scanners that had a lot of parts swapped out but were not fixed. They came in behind a tow truck. Close investigation would find a loose plug, corroded connection, bad fuse supplying a circuit that powered the component giving the false code, or a bad connection to ground. The correct way to use the scanner is the same way a cop would use information supplied by a snitch, a place to start looking for hard evidence.
Getting back to the dealer stuff, look for the Jeep dealer who has a lot of wholesale accounts to independent repair shops and body shops. The Jeep dealer with the great wholesale parts business will have more money to attract good help including first rate technicians, this is the dealer you want :!:

Eric I am sorry that your Jeep is still pooped-out. There will not be a DTC for a fried pump; never was on mine and probably won't be on yours. The dealer who finally gave me a royal poking, BUT fixed my Jeep probably forked my ECU while "fixing" the pump. They also replace all of the available sensors because they could. I hope you can get them moving on the new pump and finally get your CRD back. You might have to yank it out of that dealership and find one that does a lot of sprinter stuff. The tech who replaced my pump works on a ton of Sprinters that are owned by UPS, Canada Post, Purolator,etc. Call DC and find out if there are any restrictions on your warranty, if not send it to a new dealership who has half a clue. Since there is no modification on the Jeep that relates to the pump then you should be able to get the coverage necessary through warranty.

The thing I learned from my calamity was this: keep my trap shut, play dumb, and send it in looking stock. If I did I would have had a tropical vacation this year instead of a $6000 visa bill.

OK went to dealership and found I now have A new tech. He said he replaced the fuel send unit with A new one because the lift pump was bad....I said WHAT, these things don`t have lift pumps do they? He replied, some did.

I wanted to see it for my self but he sent it to DC for evaluation.

Really now, is this guy for real...

could I be that lucky?

I`ve never had any fuel issues except for this. :o

now he say`s I have fuel presure up to the filterhead, but nothing past it
(injector pump time)

I dont know what to think :roll:

Dude, I hate to say this, but the only reasonable explanation I can think of for the tech telling you this is that he is feeding you a total line of bulls##t to put you off for another couple of weeks, and they still have no clue how to and/or desire to fix your Jeep.

Some of them have lift pumps? It has pressure up to the filter but not past it? Total absolute crap, my next paycheck says this tech is lying thru his teeth.

If indeed there's pressure to the filterhead but nothing past it then I would suspect the filter head...or the tech :wink:

Check the tech's head, I suspect a clogged line going to his brain.

First off, even if there WAS a lift pump...and you had good pressure going to the filter head...then why f with the tank and mythical lift pump? At that point, if this were true, then the filter head was the source of the block....

This guy is lying AND dumb.

The CRD uses the same top ring on the fuel pump sending unit - but no pump - so I think it's physically possible to put a gasser pump in there - but what did he take out? and as noted in other threads - the wiring's still there.

The root Diesel system is a vacumn - so any 'fuel presure up to the filterhead' is a bad thing - but would be consistent with putting a gas pump in the diesel fuel tank.

I think they're going to replace the injector pump - and it'll still have problems, new different problems.

I know it sounds like a joke.....or at least twilight zone, but the tech said he (replaced)

the pump in the tank so it must be a gasser..The teck is a f`ing retard :x

I'll agree with that assessment. Does that kid even know it's a diesel and not a gasser?

Are you certain they're not talking about the injection pump?

Hate to say this, but it might be time to consult with a lawyer, at least to see what your options are.

asked him for the part # for the part the tech replaced..

It`s 0514832al and thats just a sending unit :evil:

Okay - he didn't put in a new pump - that's a good thing.

and looking on the bright side - maybe he's a good mechanic that doesn't understand the finer distinctions in the English language -
yeah - fuel pump - sending unit; fuel pump - sending unit - I'm sure they're easy to confuse.

I got my jeep back :D They finally replaced the injector pump and now it runs..
seems like I told them that two and half months ago :wink:

Well it runs good and the shift points are still the same..( no F37)

The only problem was the CAC hose blew off under hard acceleration..They just didn`t tighten it up enough :oops: I fixed that and every thing seems to be fine now.

I still think I have one of the good one`s, and that the CAT filter( or I )caused the pump failure, but thats my opinion :oops:

All in all I feel pretty lucky. The total bill was 550.(for filter head assembly and labor plus
an oil change that I did not need..

Three months at dealership is long, but thats a whole nother story

After long consideration and no help from DC ( about problem w/IP )My guess is RTV got sucked into the IP and killed it :dead: or could it have just been clogged :juggle:

just my :2cents: on this never dying thread.


PS at 59k my fuel mileage when up from getting a steady 19/23 to 23/ even 32 sometims :BANANA:
