Traveled from Southern Maryland with a 2,500 lb boat in tow to Hampton Falls NH on Friday. My 2006 CRD had 20,500 miles on it.

Distance: 550 miles
MPG: 15 MPG
Speed 55 to 70
Trailer: 2 wheel, not brakes

Traveled back to southern Maryland with a 3,500 boat in tow on Sunday
Distance: 550 Miles
MPG: 14 MPG
Speed: 55 to 65
Trailer: 4 wheel, brakes

Observations:

1. Did not burn any oil, changed just before I left

2. Own the way up with lighter load could run up hills without much downshifting, not so on the way back

3. Four Wheel Trailer with brakes gave much better control and felt safer

4. Was nervous about the transmission, but it worked just fine

5. I average 27 mpg around the DC beltway, so I felt that the 14 to 15 mpg was good for towing

6. Had plenty of power to move in and out of traffic when not going up hills

7. Saw a lot of Ford, Dodge and Chevy diesel trucks, only one other CRD


Overall the CRD performed great. I have the 85,000 warranty and will upgrade the transmission for towing right after it expires

Too bad Jeep does not make any more and refine the product reliability. Jeep had a winner concept - diesel torque in a Jeep for towing, and didn't follow through.

They are now using the new and improved VM "Panther" diesel and they are being made in Toledo Ohio but they are all going over seas We can't have them

That's sad that they are producing diesels in the US for Europe and we can not buy them here.

No wonder US auto companies are going down the drain - not giving the customer what they want and need.

Was it a large boat that hinder aerodynamics?
I see around 19mpg towing cars on an 18ft trailer.
