Ok, I know I will find that primary lost ignition key. It is someplace between the parking spot at the end of the walk and the bedroom vanity. No where else for it to be but when I got home late last night that tall glass of beer and fatigue was apparently more focused than I was.

I knew this day would come and I would have wished that I had a spare or two. I searched eBay a few weeks back just for that purpose as I know I do not want to get one from the dealer. I couldn't figure out what to buy though. It seems that some were just blanks without the transmitter and otheres were complete but the differences were not always clear and prices were all over the place. So, help me out you whom have purchased in the past. Send me to a link for what I need.

Thanks in advance.

You have '06 --- you need the transponder version or your engine won't run for longer than five seconds.

If you only have one key you pretty much have to go to a dealer. They have to program a new key, I've heard its in the range of $100.

If you have 2 keys, you can buy a blank off ebay or at your local locksmith and program it yourself.

I got a blank (Bianchi brand no remote, grey, not tan for the 05), off ebay for about $18, took it to a locksmith to cut the key. He told me they sold them for about $15  . Programming is very easy but requires that you have two working transponders keys. Otherwise you have to go to the dealer.

I thought you could program a key if you had one key and an EVIC.

You can get them on ebay uncut. If you have two keys already then you can just pay to have the key cut and program it yourself. I have some instructions around here somewhere. The transponder keys that are also key fobs are more expensive around 75 bucks on ebay. The transponder keys that don't have the built in fob are cheaper about 12-15, I think they refer to them as valet keys.

If you only have one key, you have to have the second one you buy programmed at the dealer or at a locksmith. Just look in the yellow pages for a locksmith who advertises that he programs transponders. My local dealer programs keys for 50 bucks. They wanted 175 for the transponder with the fob including programming and cutting. I ordered a fob transponder for about 70 bucks on ebay and had my local locksmith cut and program it for 25 bucks, nothing like saving 75 dollars by not using the dealer. I also ordered two transponder valet keys on eaby for 25 bucks and programmed them myself. Figured I should have a couple extras laying around so I wouldn't have to pay for programming again.

I am not sure about the evic, but that would be cool, and would have saved me 25 bucks.

Whew! Found it when I got home last night. Thanks for all the help especially jdorris for the eBay links. I think it is time for a third key as I know a deadd battery creates the same kind of issues on a transponder key and my batteries are getting older.

FYI - on the transponder key battery - mine died - but it was weird - it started by unlocking the door without turning off the alarm - normally 1st thing in the morning (great for waking up the neighborhood), progessively got worse until I changed the key battery - now it's fine.

All kinds of weird things happen to near-dead batteries :) My wife's KJ would sit there trying to lock / unlock the rear flipper glass when her battery was "dead". I was worried all the constant clicking (around 3 per second) would kill the lock but I guess it held its own.

Let’s see if I understood correctly  You need two programmed keys in order to be able to program a third key?

Almost. "You need two programmed keys in order to program a third key by yourself, avoiding a service charge by the dealer or other third-party key programmers".

When I bought my '02 Sport 4x4 last year part of my demands was a shop manual and 3 additional keys. The original that came was the Grey key with a chip in it. Well when they went to start making addtional keys they informed me they have no clue as to why I had a chip type key since my KJ didn't have that sort of system on it. I said then why does it have it their comment was probably a salesman sand bagging the original order to charge more for the key. For the next month with the repeated dealings and battles . I have come to realize this company is a TRUE STEALERSHIP. For this reason I go to many of the other Jeep dealers in town plus my independent 5 STAR Service center who always steers me right. But the more I see of these security keys the more I think it's just another scam to milk more money out of us then truly supply extra security. Just my $.02 worth

Anyone have some instructions on how to program a new key with the other two keys? I wouldn't mind picking up an extra one, but I don't have a clue how you would go about programming the new key.

Here are the instructions I got.

Programming Additional Keys. Must have 2 Existing Pre-Programmed Keys.

1. Insert one of the pre-programmed transponder keys into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the switch to the ON position.

2. The key should remain in the ON position for 5 seconds but not more then 15 seconds before you turn it back to the OFF position.

3. Within 10 seconds, insert the second pre-programed transponder key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the switch to the ON position. The VTSS(Vehicle Theft Security System) or Sentry Key Immobilizer System lamp (depending on model ) should start to flash. This along with a audible tone will indicate to you that the system has entered the "Customer Learn" programming mode.

4. Within 45 seconds, turn the switch to the OFF position. Insert the new transponder key and turn the switch to the ON position. After approximately 10 seconds an audible tone will sound and the Indicator lamp will stay illuminated for 3 seconds. This will be your acknowledgement that you have successfully programmed in the new transponder key.

5. To add additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 4.

Thanks jdorris! I may actually pick up a few extra keys since it's that easy.

I actually still have two uncut/ un-programmed keys for 2004 and earlier. There is a different chip for 05 and newer. If anyone wants one I will gladly part with them for 10 bucks each shipped. I will be out of town in New Mexico for a week but I may check my email in Taos once or twice and could ship them out a week from Monday. I got two off ebay a while back and they were the wrong ones according to my locksmith so I ordered new ones. Just PM me anybody who is interested.
