For a rear recovery point... the pin through the loop inside the reciever works great. If you can though, I have an extra tongue without a ball in it. I put a clevis through that. That way, I can put the loop into there, slide it in, and have no worries!
And yes, I have personally seen a "hook" from a tow strap go through the grill, ac condenser and rad of Superduty ahahah. FORDS!
If the vehicle you are trying to pull out doesn't have a hook ot hitch in the back... you're kind "hooped" with the loops ahaha. Uhm, best bet, buy a $10 axle strap so you can wrap it around something back there and use a clevis to hook it all up.
I personally have an old army box in the back of the KJ. Always keep it there. Have 125' of recovery strap, different lengths, all 25,000lbs (get different lengths for convienence, but all same load rating!!!!). Then also have three 50,000 clevis', two axle straps, and a couple hooks with slide pins. Pretty much pull anything and everything out with that.
And... spend the cash and get the front hooks!! You'll naver regret it!
