Those FJs are just plain ugly I have tried to like them but just can't. They seem capable off road however and of course there is no shortage of after market stuff.

I'd like to go up there myself. Maybe we can get a group together.

I would have bought one if they offered a diesel.

Not sure what the big hype is with the FJs minus the looks, what makes them so popular?

Toyota would not have surging sales if they did not know what they where doing. This Jeep was the first non-Toyota vehicle I've ever owned. I do not regret my Jeep purchase, but that FJ is a pretty smoothe vehicle.

Selectable lockers: standard... 'nuff said, I think. I wouldn't mind having one, actually, if they weren't so ugly on the outside.

I didn't like it because you had more blind spots than visible spots out the windows.

Back in the first week of May I was down it Georgetown Texas visiting my mom. Saw my first FJ up close they are nice and this one was set up Bumpers, Winch, Armor, bead locks, Big stupid tires, and a plethera of Lights. It was real nice till you looked at the Sticker Price    The only other time I've seen anything really interesting is when X-treme 4x4 on the Spike channel took one and made it ready for off road complete with exoskeleton, that could be lowered on for off roading and lifted off for daily driving. Still a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$

I drove an FJ and was very impressed. It's not my style, but if you could make it look like a liberty and put a jeep badge on it, I think 99% of the people here would agree it's a pretty bad little truck.

There is a huge range of prices on them. I've seen then on dealer lots from the low 20s to about $30k. Pretty similar pricing to the KJ.

I never liked the look of them at first but they grew on me. If I could afford I would have both the Libby and the FJ. Nice pictures of the liberty on that forum though :D

It shouldn't really matter what the truck looks like. The FJ is a respectable rig for off roading.

I wouldn't be able to afford the midgrade / premium gas that's required to run it but if it came out back in 2002, I might have had a harder time picking the Liberty.

FYI you can run regular gas with only a slight reduction in performance. Using 91 Octane was something of a marketing sleight of hand to boost the HP numbers.

The FJ/4/Runner/Tacoma are quite capable off road, I've seen stock or near stock models on the Rubicon.

I just wish they would loose the freaking huge blind spot created by B Pillar and offer it with the 2.7L 4 banger and/or a Diesel to make it less painful to feed.

with the 4 banger it would really suck gas! That pig is heavy, now a diesel yes but 4 banger no way worse than a 4 banger in the Liberty!

TBO, I'm seriously thinking about one in the future. A diesel version would Rock!

Why is it so popular despite being uglier than dirt?

...Because Jeep no longer makes an off-road capable SUV to fill American's needs for one.

Ten or fifteen years ago I mountain biked through that same area above American Fork canyon. Those photos make me want to return with my KJ.

People like the FJ because it looks cool (to the eyes of certain beholders), off-roads as well or better than any other stock SUV except the Wrangler, and benefits from perceived Toyota quality.

I spent a day driving an FJ at an Alabama ORV park last year. Overall it performed impressively. The exception is the visibility. As mentioned, the gun slit windows create major blind spots for the driver. And should you be unfortunate enough to ride in the back seat (cave) you can barely see anything at all. Kinda defeats the purpose of riding through nature if you can’t see it.
