i was thinking that the main reason for the Drain Valve was to prevent oil spilling all over the top side of the skid plate, hence the add. tube you can buy with it. and the side perk is that you dont have to chance a stripped drain plug, not the other way around...

I am not sure how the oil from the drain plug would hit the skid without the Fumoto since it drains straight down. The plus for me with the Fumoto was all of the reports I have read here and elsewhere of $800 cast aluminum oil pans with stripped threads. That was punctuated for me when I went to do my first oil change and found the plug so tight that I did not feel safe in removing it. I had the dealer who had done the changes before change the oil and install the Fumoto as a result. Had I understood the relation of the Fumoto to the skid plate I would not have ordered it with the nipple and tube though.

Ever thought of putting a 90-degree bend before the valve to put the nipple out of harm's way. A decent brass fitting would probably only cost a few dollars. The end result would be the nipple being oriented horizontally and more clearance space below the pan.

Thoughts?

Mine shows just a bit but doesn't really stick out past the skid...thought about building a metal skid like the one you can kind of see on the engine skid that gives access to the front diff:

I believe that would work if you could figure out the correct size and tread for the pan but it is non-standard for domestic application and if you used the adapter that was machined for us then you would add to the exposure I think. I really don't feel it is a problem if you have a skid unless you are heavy into radical off road applications. Even then it doesn't really stick out past the deepest part of the skid and would not at all if you used the one without the nipple or cut the nipple off.

I was thinking of the adapter between the fumoto drain and fumoto adapter (since they're both a common and identical thread) but point taken about more components making it more exposed. Perhaps a simple plate over the access hole in the skid would reduce potential for hazzards.

The Fomoto is fine but too big. I solve my problem with the Dragon oil Drain Valve. Sold by Trasko-usa.com call it the D- Valve.

It cost now about $29.95 and it work very good. It is well worth it....

Nescosmo....

It does look pretty neat, but it has extra bits that you need to keep around and I have a habit of losing things like that. I suppose they could be kept somewhere in the vehicle.

I'd be interested in knowing what size you got for the 2.8L too.

It just seems to me that if you have an OEM or after market skid the risk is overly exaggerated unless you off road a lot and under harsh conditions. The drain is behind and partially protected by the cross member that the engin skid attaches to and then by the tranny skid. I may either cut the nipple off mine or cut it partially so it will break away if hit but you would need to drag on something small, sharp, and hard over the engine skid that could then drop over the access how in the tranny skid to do real damage. I don't ever plan on that myself.

I too am interested in which Drain vale yu purchased. Being stainless steel you can probably tighten it in at the same torque specs as the reaglar drain plug, which would be a big plus.

Thanks!

Please do tell us which dragon valve we need to order. Also, do you have any pictures of the valve installed. I do not have a skid plate covering the drain valve and only go off-roading once in a while...does anybody think that might a bad idea?

What do I need if my drain hole is already stripped if I want to install the fumoto?

use an acceptable thread repair kit.. which will involve, buying the kit that has the
drill, tap and insertion tool. then use the kit, and buy the appropriate fumoto valve...
if it was me i would prolly get a kit for a more standard thread pattern.

the fumoto and the HUGE M1-301 it is about 2 times the size of
the stock filter... this id the old fumuto that has the adapter that
have cut close to 1/2" off of it.. my skids are going to have to be
altered to accept the size of the bigger filter.

Wow! Whats all that black crud all over your oil pan. Mine don't look like that with 52,000 miles on it. Maybe you have some seepage somewhere.

I think maybe to check the provent drain or hoses first, that does looks similar to what a draft tube would do.

taped it up... still leaks a bit... now i think i am just going to clean it up and glue it.
