Does anyone know which protocol is used by the OBD II in '05 KJ? Does it use J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO9141-2, ISO14230-4, or ISO15765-4/SAE J2480?

I hope it's not CANbus ... having a hard time finding a reader that's Linux-friendly.

Stupid vendors ...

They used the same reader they use on my mom's 2005 PT Cruiser if that helps.

Your '05 is actually a hybrid. It uses a partial CAN bus and then translates that to the rest of the vehicle's "PCI bus" (not related to the PCI bus in your home computer.) The '04s and earlier were PCI only.

Regardless of what year you have, the OBD-II port on the KJ speaks J1850 VPW according to the service manual.

Try http://scantool.net, they sell an interface for $99, or $75 if you don't need the little metal box to hold the PCB (for the extra $15 you can get a plastic box from Radio Hack and still have enough money left to pay for shipping.)

Their software is for Windows, but a quick scan of their forum shows that there are several Linux programs that can use it too.

VPW sounds good. Various "scantool" pages on the web shows at least the 2003 KJ uses VPW. I'll probably order either a scantool, or Multiplex Engineering (as they seem to say you need to write your own software anyway, and as such would provide API specs).

Thanks for your answer.
