Getting really bummed out reading about peoples misfortune, hoping it doesn't happen to me.........

The front aluminum housing covers all years, and not much of a problem if you keep the front tires on the ground. Getting air borne and dropping down on a surface that the tires grip on will break it.

Blew mine Aug.2005

All years from '02-'07 have the same diff, now the '08 KK's have a reinforced D30A but most likely will not fit in a KJ for clearance issues from the reinforced pinion area which is also a diff mount for the KK's D30A(also has a different cradle to clear the diff).

Wouldn't ESP-equipped vehicles be at less of a risk of this happening? I thought all Libby's were ESP equipped....

A locker in the rear will help alot since it wouldnt let you spin as much if you got on two tires. Putting a TT in the front will also help alot.

Putting a TT in the front and a locker in the rear should help ALOT. haha.

Why would they make a "replacement" for the cherokee with a Jeep that has a weakness like that? Don't get wrong though, I love my liberty.

Simple, it is not a problem for 99% of the KJ's on the road as they won't be wheeled any harder than 99% of the Cherokees were/are. Some of us here at LOST are in the minority for the way we wheel our Libertys. Most will never see any more than a snow covered road or county maintained dirt road so they will probably live forever. I wouldn't worry a lot about it either, I have seen several KJ's get the crap wheeled out of them for a long time and they never broke.
BTW, Many a XJ has broken u-joints and then exploded axles which in turn took out the ball joints when wheeled hard w/ stock parts, leaving them stranded on the trail and the owners planning on hundreds or thousands of $$'s of upgrades just like so many of us are.

Yea, they do pretty good offroad. Front diffs and upper control arms seems to be fairly common about failing though.

I see what you're saying Blake, but a rear locker won't stop the Jeep from flexing and bringing a front tire off the ground... :P

It's just something that we're guna have to live with unless someone gets something to fit or goes SFA. I agree with KJ04...it's not a problem if you keep the wheels planted and don't over-do it.

This is true, but youve got to think, if you bring a front tire off the ground which makes it spin, at least one rear wheel must be spinning since the tcase is locked. If you have a locker, it will put torque to the rear wheel that is firmly planted on the ground(since your flexed) and keep the front wheel from spinning. Then you would load it up when you came back down and you also wouldnt need to get a run and go since you could just crawl over it.

Many of the midwest members know what Im talking about since many of us have lockers and many do not. Meh-Kick knows how much of a difference a locker can make since he just got one. I could crawl up almost anything with little to no effort and you would have to square up or get a run and go.

I'm betting it's a whole new ball game with a locker...but this is coming from someone who doesn't have one. I guess wheeling with open diffs. teaches you alot. IMO...If I have to really get at it hard, I don't belong there.

I'll have locker(s) in time...

Why can't we admit these things are meant to wheel??  Just playin', that isn't guna stop me!

BTW...Blake, you guys wheel a whole different terrain down there. I'd really like to make it down just to see what it's like. Looking at the pics makes me drool.

Having a locker in the rear and a True Trac in the front will not stop you from blowing the front housing, I have both and still blew mine. You don't have to be going fast to get the front tires in the air, just a bump and they're up. Crawling doesn't always get you where you need to go, and sometimes you have to just put your foot in it a little.
When the spinning front tire gets air borne and then drops on a surface where tire suddenly grips is the problem. Droping on a slick surface decreases the chance of breakage since the tire doesn't grip on the slick surface and generally keeps spinning.

Lets face it, our front housing sucks :!:
