OK this is a video and about half way through you can hear a strange click click click coming from what i think is the transfer case or something in the front diff.

any opinions?

Really hard to tell from that video. Sounds more like someone tapping on the microphone than a T-case.

What was the sequence of events that led up to it, prior to the spinning through the dirt? Does it happen only in 4WD? Automatic or Standard transmission?

I heard no noise that would cause concern
My jeep makes more clicks knocks and bangs then I can name

keep in mind sand gets in stuff and makes it click knock and grind
this is also it eating away at said object making the noise
the same holds true for mud and water ,wich is why I hate mud and sand
now any part that holds oil and keeps it in can not get sand and mud in it ,oil satys in then sand and mud wich is larger in size can not get in ,things like rear diff ,transmission ,t-case and engine to name a few
so now we know that U-joints can go out so what do I do?
I carry spares in case I need them
and I avoid stuff that would cause them to fail premature

My point is if you can not say "The noise is this" and you drive the jeep then no one on this board can either with out driving the jeep
also if you dont have an oil leak then sand and mud ,wich cause strange noises, can not get in
and even if you have an oil leak that would have to be one heck of a leak to let stuff in
I would get me some spare U-joints and carry the tools to chnge them
any thing else breaks you can not drive it any way

I do not worry about "noises" that my rig makes
I look at what I am going to do ,obsticle, try to figure out what I could break clibing said obsticle and is it worth the risk
now the TJ is not my DD so 99% of the time I will give it a shot and I have never had to leave my rig behind
Look at some of the pics I posted about the new off road park and think about how deep those cracks are
4-5 FEET and I run a TJ on 31's and I play with guys running 35" but I still go play and worry about the noises when they go POP or BANG and I stop moving ,I know that it is not IF it happens but WHEN it happens I WILL be ready
Just do the same and you WILL feel better

Sounds like a CV joint to me. That is what they sound like whene they go. They make that clicking noise like what is heard in your vid. Just my .02 I would check into them.

2005 Sport with "STUFF"

The main problem with listening to that clip you posted is that you're engine drowns out most of the other sounds, but I don't really hear anything that sounds out of the ordinary. You could get underneath and check the boots on the front half-shafts, also check the CVs on the ends of the front driveshaft. If everything looks OK then try driving around on a dirt lot in 4WD to see if you can replicate it. Other than that I'm at a loss to tell you what may or may not be wrong...

I always notice this sound, mainly in 4-low it seems.

And always in dirt/sand spinning the front tires a reasonable amount, like in the video. It is a sound that increases with speed, and is by tire revolution.

CV's were my first guess, however i see no tears or any suspicious apperance on the outside of boots or other things.

anything i might be missing by checking them? It has been doing it for a while now (6-8 months) and Ive been in 4WD many many times, and not going easy either.
