TSB on Rear Brakes

For the last few months, an oscillating squeaking/rattling sound came from the rear suspension whenever I applied the brakes . The sound would become louder and more frequent as the Jeep came to a stop. Two weeks before my warranty expired, I brought the Jeep to my new dealer and they found a relatively recent technical service bulletin regarding the problem. Under warranty, they replaced the rear rotors and pads and installed new anti-rattle straps on the calipers. The service adviser said the bill would have come to over $1,000 if not under warranty. My previous dealer charged me $36 just to fix the emergency brake cable and couldn't solve this problem. The problem is now gone and I have brand new rear brakes for free!

Apparently excessive play in the original calipers causes them to destroy the rotor surface. The TSB requires installing the anti-rattle straps and new pads and recommends refacing the rotors. However, it requires replacing the rotors if they can't be brought within specification.

Glad they fixed it under warranty. Brakes are usually only covered for 12k so they did you a favor.

Changing the pads and rotors does not cost $1,000. More like $200..

I hope a dealer doesnt charge someone 1k to change the rear brakes. :shock:

sweet, what year is your KJ?
Is the TSB for specific years or build dates.
I don't feel like going out to get my VIN right now...its too cold

NO DOUBT...while he did you a solid, he's full of himself....can that service manager pat himself on the back anymore? 1000 bucks...that's quite funny for brakes and rotors...heck even throw in calipers...still not anywhere near that price tag. glad they got you fixed up...full of bs or not. LOL

1.4 hours of billable labor at $90-100 per hour, 2 rotors at $64 per rotor, and 2 pads at $67.95 per set. I also had the anti-rattle straps installed and spare key reprogrammed. So he was full of crap but I was happy regardless. I was surprised they covered it at all because my previous dealership charged me $36 just to repair the emergency brake cable, presumably because it was part of the "consumable" braking system. The TSB covers 2003 - May 27, 2006. My KJ is a 2005.

I wonder if the new strap can be applied to existing calipers? In other words, does this require replacement calipers?

The calipers are original but the new pads come with longer caliper slippers. The anti-rattle strap sits flush across the top of the caliper and appears to snap onto the caliper slippers at each end. I'm guessing that the new slippers and strap attempt, respectively, to prevent side to side and front to back rotation of the calipers. Hopefully the implementation is better than the ball joint fix.
