Transmission coolers, and hood louver/vents question

Hey guys,

My '07 KJ came with tow hooks, and trailer hitch, but no transmission cooler (lame). I want to install a cooler to extend the life of the transmission. Mopars is like $275 on J parts. Doesn't that seem expensive for a transmission cooler? It seems like I can get a another trans cooler cheaper then that, but if I install an off brand will I have to worry about warranty issues? If an off brand is ok, any recommendations.

Also I want to install some hood louvers/vents on my hood. I live in VA, so no dust issues. I think they look bad a@#, and would help performance. Again, should I worry about the stealership giving me a hassle. They'll will look for any excuse they can find, will the vents give them one?

reduce engine heat, especially offroad where you're driving low speeds.

I have been looking at some hood louvers just trying to fiqure what size I want. For trans coolers check out Jegs, Summit Racing or some of those for them. Lot cheaper than Mopar for sure.

If you're going to buy one, buy a good one. There are many brands, many sizes, and prices on the market... I like Hayden.

Hood Louvers on my '02 TJ
easy install ,but you will have to get the nerve to cut your hood
I would watch where you put them to avoid water from getting on something that may not like it
also as far as tranny coolers
I run a 4 pass cheepo from 4wd hardware and seems to be fine
I ran the TJ with no cooler for 2+ years but it has a MUCH more robust auto
TF999 3 speed that they have been using form back in the CJ days but back then it was the TF904

I think everyone would agree that heat buildup under the hood is not exactly a good thing. I plan on putting hood louvers on mine (some day). Here is a link to the company I'm going with so far: http://www.raceace.com/

I know that if you google genright you will find them
I paid 1/2 of what most of those cost for the 3 on my hood

You sure it doesnt have a tranny cooler? I thought that was stock on all libertys with the 42rle tranny. I know it comes with the tow pack.

What tranny does your TJ have Jason? I know the Rubicon has the 42rle.

It maybe built into the radiator like my 02'. Although I dont really like it. Its held up for 98k miles. After christmas or for christmas i'm getting an external to mount in front of the condensor.

Thats the ones I am going with as soon as I can deceide if I want the square one or the single row ones and then where I want them for sure. Good prices on them

it is a 3 speed auto ,no over drive
lock up in 3rd ,no torque converter slip
and put in 1 it stays in 1 and will hold like a stick that is in 1
same goes for 2 starts in 2 and stays in 2

lets see 800 to a 1000 at least for that hood or under a 100 for louvers, man thats a hard choice,NOT and although I do like the looks of KYs hood its more street looking than off road

What evidence do you guys have that hood louvers extend the life of a vehicle? Honestly I don't think a 10-degree decrease in temperature under the hood is going to make much of a difference. I've always thought that hood louvers were nothing more than a cosmetic addition.

here it is in extremely simple terms. I know theres a lot more 2 it than this but... heat in an engine causes oil breakdown AKA sludge. less heat=less sludge; less sluge=longer engine life; colder temps=better performance. And loovers dont actuall do any cooling they just ehaust the warm air that is forced out by the air being pushed in through the grill and past the radiator. An ky's hood was expensive but hey its looks good. I myself am leaning twors somethign like the lund scoops(not actually using the lun ones because their just for show) and some exhaust louvers on the fenders. I personally think with the body shaping and style of the liberty a set of scoops would look better than stock and give the libby a bit more of an edge.

louvers work well because the fan / air is bringing air into the compartment and then it would go out through the louvers, I already took the rubber weatherstripping off the rear edge of the hood/cowl and you can feel lots of heat coming out that way, so I know louvers would help. with a forward facing only type scoop there would be no where for the air to go, unless you did have "exhaust ports"

before I installed them I would over heat out on the trails in the summer
now I can run the trails top up and AC on and temp stays the same as driving on the highway at 70
out side temp is 95+
proof enough for me they work
I dont care how much they "extend the life" of the TJ it has 44K on it at 5 years old and sees >5K a year now
so it would take 20 years to break 140K and the I6 goes well over 150K most see 200K
I just want to run my AC when I wheel

I want louvers myself. However, I have wheeled my kj in temps around 95-100 with the windows up and AC on. The temp needle never quite reached the halfway point. I did have the tranny temp light come on once but, I was still in 4hi when I really shouldn't have been. Once I switched to low range, the light went out. Never seen it since. All that said though, the underhood temp seems really high after wheeling in 4lo as compared to highway driving for the same amount of time so it seems to me that anything to vent that heat away from the engine can only be beneficial.

Tom, any issues with taking that rubber seal off? snow being my main concern.
