Over and over again forever.

CEL is on for the ORM and code reader can't read it. I tried another different code reader and that don't read it either. When clearing it says it cleared but didn't. I know the CEL will clear after a few starts after I plug the MAF back in. I don't want the dealer to flash the computer, runs too good.

Guys:

Check fuse box. I recall this kind of reader error when one of the fuses was burnt out on a couple cars (VW's particularly). Reader couldn't read or dlear codes, but acted like everything was fine.

So what's the latest on this?

Is this solution flash dependent? IOW's if you never had the F37/F31 flashes, will this still work? I remember one of the flashes corrected an OBD connection/read problem. Is this flash, or the lack thereof, causing the read/clear problems with this reader?

Ahh.... It was the F31 recall that fixed the OBD communication protocol problems. The problem affected ~3600 2006 model year CRD's. Since mine is a 2005, I shouldn't have a problem...

I got the flash today and the code reader works now like uncaged says. 8) Looks like I got to pay for a recall though.

BlackLiberty -

I don't know why a dealership service dept would invoke a fee for applying a recall mandated flash update to the ECM. As I understand it, this recall was required by the DOT to make the CRD's OBDII connection compatible with the industry standard OBDII specifications - correctiing a problem that occurred during one of DC's prior TSB flash updates.

If they hooked up your CRD to their magical, proprietary computer system and it indicated the flash was indeed needed on your vehicle (which is sounds like happened), it would seem that performing this flash update was their obligation regardless of the warranty status of the vehicle.

Good luck with it. And if you have luck getting them to absorb the cost, post your experience here.

If you check the last post of this link, you can see the fustration I experianced at the stealership. I was glad to pay the 90 bucks instead of going to jail for choking somebody. I'm going to send the bill with the copy of the recall to Chrysler for reimbusement but rots of rucks on that one.

Out of curiosity, I called Launch to see what the power draw of the Creader was since I leave mine plugged in 24/7. Tech support couldn't help, so they took my name and number. An engineer called me back and said he didn't know what the exact power usage was, but it was "in the milli, milli amps." He also said that "the computer uses more power than the Creader."

Mine's been plugged in for a month straight, but thought I'd ask about the power usage for the heck of it. Definitely won't worry about it any more.

Well, I've had this code reader plugged in for a couple of weeks now. I must say that I'm a fan!

I bought the SEGR kit, but by the time it arrived the weather had turned cold. I don't have a garage, so motivation for installing this thing in the cold is pretty low. I read about this code reader and thought that it might suffice until the weather warms up and the SEGR could be installed. Now that I've been using the code reader for a couple of weeks, I'm not sure if I'll ever bother with installing the SEGR. I'm not sure it offers any real advantage. The code reader definitely offers the advantage that no hacking of the wiring harness is necessary. Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about taking the vehicle in for service. You just plug the MAF back in and unplug the reader. There's no SEGR installation for the tech to discover.

I guess the only things that I can find to nit-pick about are as follows:

- The constant cycling of the "LAUNCH" was a little annoying at first. However, I’ve gotten used to it and now hardly notice it anymore.
- The clearing of the CEL lamp takes a little longer after start-up. This is to be expected and is fine with me. The significant-other on the other hand may initially be confused by this the next time she drives the Jeep. This just gives her more ammo to beat me up about my techno-nerd toys.

Unless there is some disadvantage that I'm unaware of - this would be my recommendation as the way to go for the ORM mod. It’s cheap and it’s easy to install, just disconnect the MAF and plug this thing in and you’re done. No wire-harness hacking, no trouble with installing the SEGR box somewhere, no issues surrounding getting the vehicle serviced etc…

Today while at my somewhat local Harbor Freight retailer (Dayton,Ohio) on sale for a modest sum of $29.97 was the Creader gauge thats indicated on this thread . GOT ONE !! Don,t know if these are also same price through online sales or not . Used my savings to extend my warranty for 12 months for a total of $35.97 plus the tax man and no shipping cost .Has anyone else noticed that with CEL on and MAF unplugged that it don't seem to run as well as with CEL off , Creader on and MAF unplugged. Maybe it's just me ? Anyone else have the same experience ?

The CEL light goes out without any difference on mine. It's a good feeling not to have the glaring CEL on and keeps the princess from complaining about it. The ORM does make the engine run a little better for me. When I hooked up my chip, it runs a lot better.

Does the CRD require a CAN-compliant scanner? I have an old AutoXray EZ-Link OBD-II scanner and it syncs up, but only shows throttle position and RPM. I called AutoXray and they said that by 2006, virtually all vehicles required a CAN-compliant scanner to read anything useful. Is this true, and a "plain" OBD-II scanner is not expected to work with the CRD?

I have noticed an uneven idle ocassionally with the MAF unplugged. Time will tell whether this happens with the SEGR.

I only finished my segr install last Friday. Drove it 30 miles each way today, to and fro, and it seems to idle smoother and seems to be much quieter. I can't notice any difference in the shut down.
But it sure is nice not to have our amber friend lite up.
