Hey,

I had read that trick to make your engine code show on the dash, does this not work with 2002 models? I can't make it work.

any advice?

It works on mine.... But my cluster was replaced in 2004 (?)

All you do is cycle the key from 'Off' to 'On' to 'Off' 3 times in rapid succssion.

It doesn't consistantly work on my 05 CRD, thinking about getting an OBDII interface you plug into a laptop. There is free software for them downloadable from the internet and if your smart enough can write your own progam (that wouldn't be me). My nephew made his own interface and wrote the progam to monitor and tweak his Subaru maybe I can get him to do the same for mine.

I think this only checks the lamps and gauges.

Done means there are no codes stored.

off, on, off, 3 times, would it not be "on" the last setting. In off it don't show nothing.

The turning on with the "O" button held does something for me?

Instrumentation check ... the gauges and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster all cycle through various readings. Lots of fun to do to somebody else's vehicle when they aren't expecting it ("Holy cow, what's wrong with your ride?!?").

I've always cycled it from the ACC power settting instead of from OFF. Don't know if it makes any difference at all. 3 quick cycles, ACC to ON, ending at ON. You have to hold the key lock button in to cycle it quickly enough. It will very quickly cycle and any codes or DONE will show up on your digital odometer. Then it will flip back to your miles, so you have to keep your eyes open.

I've got an '02 and was able to do the instrument cluster/code check. However, it did not say "DONE" or the p-code for done at the end, it said "6.0"?

The instrument cluster check and the fault code check are two separate things. The number at the end of the instrument cluster check is the software version.
