Its time for me to do a transmission oil change, and the shop told me it would be best to do a transmission flush. Is that sufficient enough? He said I should bring twice the amount of required oil so they can flush it really good.

I had mine flushed/screens cleaned at about 30k by a local tranny shop that I "trust" due to prior work. The owner said that the flushed fluid/screens did not show any overt signs of wear on the tranny and said that I could have waited longer to change out. They replaced the fluid with a non-chrysler product (don't remember what kind) which exceeded the spec requirements for the car. The cost was about $ 150. The dealer was actually slightly cheaper, but they only were doing a flush, no screen change.

I am coming up on 60k and will talk with the tranny shop about whether I need to do it again, or can wait.

I absolutely do not adhere to the 'flush is good enuff' concept - drop the pan, noting any excessive clutch material in the bottom, new filters and fresh syn fluid - if fluid is brown, smells burnt, or stuff in the bottom of the pan, then I drain the cooler, un-bolt and rotate the torque convertor for manual evacuation of the hydraulic circuits - I sleep better, having seen the actual condition of the fluid and filter, knowwhuttimean?

Do you know that synthetic tranny fluid is dyed red? So the color and how it smells no longer tells you anything on it's condition with ATF+4 or Amsoil ATF.

If you cannot smell that burned clutch odor in the fluid, p'rhaps a trip to yer local EENT may be in order, eh?

Reg'lar atf is dyed red for leak detection - hydraulic oil is brownish-clear - power steering fluid is one instance...............

I agree about the filter, but my fluid gets changed every 15,000 miles(flush) and filters every 30,000(with flush).Oh and yes my sense of smell is almost shot, painting vehicles and that year in Iraq kinda burned it out(10% from the VA).My motto is change it before it can go bad,it's cheaper that way.
