Hey guys - It's been a little while. I have a 02 4x4 KJ sport with the 3.7L. It has 71k on it and is in great shape. I have been upgrading to synthetic oil all around and I just did an oil change on the motor. I put in Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10W-30 ( I live in AZ). I also put on a Napa Gold 1515 filter (slightly larger). After the oil change I noticed a new clicking or chattering sound in the engine when I start the truck cold or when idling. While driving it's fine (no noise). It's new after the oil change, but it has be abnormally cold here (40-50F) and I didn't notice "right after" the oil change, so it might be connected to the cold weather. The noise gets faster with the rpms at idle. It seems to be coming from the passenjer side of the engine under the aircleaner. It sounds like its "in" the engine though.

My theroy is that it's a hydraulic lifter that is making the noise. It don't know if that is possible. Maybe the larger filter is causing lower oil psi at idle and thus the lifter is clacking.

Is this something I should be worried about? Any ideas? I suppose it could be something else. Let me know if you can think of anything.

Merry Christmas!

10w-30 in the summer and 5w-30 in the winter. ;) Oh, and let it warm up for five minutes if it's cold out.

Mine has also been doing the same thing. It is not especailly cold here, but after sitting all night in about 40 F weather it makes a clicking noise just as you described.
I also did an oil change recently with Amsoil 5w-30 and an Ea series filter.

I dont seem to remember it last winter but maybe I just didnt notice it. I thought it might be something to do with the belts contracting in the cold weather.

what oil are you running? i run 5w30 in the winter, and 10w30 in the summer. my first bout with cold it usually has 10w30 in it, and it makes some noise for a little bit, but after it warms up it shuts up

Interesting........ Maby the 3.7 doesn't like the 10w30 in cold weather???

I have been using 5w30 syn (mostly Mobil 1) year round and we have had single didget night time weather and I have no noise wether it is in the garage or the driveway overnite. Also left it in the garage for 3 weeks in November and when I got back It started right up and no noise.

I do my own oil changes and have been using Mopar oil filters. (FWIW)

Maby it likes the 5w30 better than 10w30 in the cold???

Also, I think it was JeepJeepster that pointed it out but if you have your heater on 3 specific settings (can't remember which ones they were, exactly) the AC compressor may be kicking on and the clutch for that thing can be pretty noisy.

I'm pretty sure that it's the hydrolic lifters, no oil = clatter until the pressure builds back up.
