Is driving the Jeep Liberty without the CV half-shaft dangerous?

I had to take my passenger side CV joint out because of problems with its connection to the mid-shaft, but it doesn't look like it would create a safety issue. A transmission mechanic just told me that he thinks it would be unsafe. Your thoughts?

There are a few here that have run without front CV Shafts...I think they discoed the front driveshaft to do that.

Shouldnt be a problem if you take both of them out, seal off the holes, and MAKE SURE you are in 2wd. May be best to take the front DS out just incase.

i think its possible you may wipe out the wheel bearing because that big axle nut wont be on there. worst case scenario the hub falls out of the bearing and the wheel falls off. can't tell you for sure because i never had mine apart yet. 100k and still good. i know with ford exploders and their hub and bearing assemblies the axle nut has to be on there or the bearing gets wiped out. i used to work for ford and saw one towed in because another shop forgot to tighten the axle nut.

Yeah it's got a hemi!

I ran without them for a few weeks. No issues other than leaking fluid. It's tough to seal the holes completely. The front hubs are hub/bearing units, so the shaft really makes no difference when they are out.

The old XJ's had to have a stub shaft in the hub bearings. The 2wd ones had a short shaft with a nut on it. does anyone with a 2wd libby have the stubs? The older unit bearings would eventually fail if they didn't have the pressure of the stub shaft holding them.

When I popped the front dif on the trails, I had to drive 200 miles or so without them - if both are out then is no problem if it is an emergency - I would not recommend doing it but if it is absolutely necessary then is ok. I did not go over 45mph on side roads or highway.
Just remember you are driving it without a key component and it is dangerous.
