Just a matter of curiosity - I have already had my rear main seal replaced once and it is leaking again, and it's been less than 10K miles. Total mileage is at 33K so far.

Post up!

Check to see if our Liberty CRDs have a Viton rear seal. If it does, they need to clean the crank seal area with solvent and install it dry. I was instructed that if a Viton seal is installed with oil on the shaft or sealing surface, it will leak.

No leak yet.

Voted none, but checking before my trip to TX at 25K miles, looks as though I'm starting to get some weepage slowly collecting at the bottom of the bellhousing. Might be my time is coming as well.

Is the main seal over the back side of the block where the timing belt/chain is or where the bellhousing connects to the tranny? I've been seeing seepage from the bellhousing/tranny area since its first oil change. I assume poor quality control in assembly and it's not that bad, so I don't want to mess with it unless it gets worse.

LOL I voted none but by the replies I can see that I might have that problem. There is a little droplet of oil on my oil filter from where I don't know. Could this be it??

The rear main seal is a round seal that sits over the crank where the oil pan, crank, and block meet. it is just behind the flywheel/flexplate, and while a generally cheap part, requires an engine pull and clutch/flywheel, or torque converter/flexplate pull to get at, meaning there is alot of labor involved.

Good to know. Now, while we are at it would such a leaky bit leave oil hanging off my oil filter?

I have checked the car from below while in a little trench thing and my mate and I could not find anywhere from where the oil came. Nothing to be seen from below.

OT, but those mopar filters are junk. Of the five I've seen on CRDs they've all been leaking.

I have noticed you must tighten the crap out of them or they will leak, especially in the winter.

Used the MOPAR filters always had a drop of oil, switched to the WIX and my pan and filter are dry.

Also changed the copper washer on the drain plug, had a small seep there. :D

Thanks for chiming in guys! I changed the oil filter to a MOPAR one (from MOPAR) and still had the droplet hanging there. Checked oil recently and don't see anything missing (bloody dipstick is impossible to decipher when theres "enough" in the sump).

What specs of filter should I be looking at? I would like to try without a MOPAR one. I read somewhere too that the MOPAR ones were of the worst quality in the comparison performed.

Since I live in Denmark I will have a little task of finding a place which sells different brands of oil filters, not a too hard task really, except it's annoying all shops close when I am off work :D

34K and bone dry (thank goodness!).
I use Wix/Napa oil filters when changing oil and that is bone dry also.
Presently using synthetic 5W-40 Rotella and level never changes.
