Okay, today I totaled the muffler. Don't ask, lets gust say it involved a rock and a lead foot. Anyhow where can I get replacement? Any aftermaket Cat-backs yet?

In the UK we have been "tuning" Diesels for a while if you can live with the extra noise go with a proven aftermarket product like Flowmaster or Remus match the bore of the pipes and gas flow will be fine

Well since it's a turbo you can run it legal without a muffler in the US and some, like VW's, are really quite without the muffler and the diesel's turbo will spool up much faster without the back pressure.

Turbos hate exhaust, and hate mufflers more...lol.Actually the turbo will quiet the exhaust bit like oldnavy said.If you use a aftermarket muffler, make sure it is not a chambered style, like flowmaster, they are a big restriction for turbos.

Yes they do hate mufflers, but on a gasser they are lots louder then a diesel engine. On your CRD take the muffler off and run a straight pipe with slight turn down like stock pipe. You may however need a small non chamber resinator like a short straight through muffler at the back if there is any drone at 2000 to 2500 rpm range, just depends on engine and driver. If it were mine that would be the first performance mod I would do to the CRD, I may do it to wife's CRD but if she is happy as is why bother.

The first thing I did back in May was take my muffler off. I got all kinds of warning and diagnostic lights on the dash a few hours later. I assumed removing the muffler caused it, so I put the muffler back on. After 12,000 miles now, and having the light back on three times, I realize that the muffler maybe wasn't the cause.

What I did notice with the muffler off: Turbo spooled up WAY faster. And the engine sounded like a 4-cylinder gas motor running out of the header. Kind of like a ragged out 1987 Pontiac Grand Am or something. Not very pleasant to the ears. But it did spool up faster! I'm thinking about trying it again sometime...

I put a Magnaflow straight thru on mine. It's got some sound deadening on it, so it's not loud at all. Nice mellow sound at hwy speeds.

I was wondering if this BIG 4 banger would sound more like a tractor or have the more pleseant sould of the 1.9L VW TDI, which was very sexy without muffler running BIG injectors and a Stage II Rocket chip. 8)

To me with out the muffler it sounds more like a loud gas engine. You loose all diesel rumble :?

Tomorrow I'm takeing her to the local exaust shop see what they can get me into. I don't mind it louder but I want it to sound like a diesel. I love seeing the looks on people wandering; Whats he have in that thing? It sounds like a Diesel.

Maybe have them "slip" a resonator from a 70's caddie on there with no muffler and see how that sounds.Or,like boxhead, use a magnaflow or a dynomax ultraflo, they are "turbo friendly" :)
