Hi Jimmy,

Check the part number, I think it's a 15870. As far as I've read, it's a direct factory replacement. The instructions simply state to remove the old system, hang the new system up (which comes in two pieces), two nuts secure the halves to each other, the other two nuts bolt up to the factory flange. So reusing an exhaust hanger or two and four nuts later, you're done.

Is there any "real" data that show a difference in mileage or power with a glasspack/magnaflow/mufflerectomy?

I know from personal experience that changing the sound of something can sometimes completely change my perception of it - for better or worse - so solid data is important.

I am seriously considering this mod but am a bit hesitant. I keep having having flashbacks to High School when we would put Cherry Bombs on our cars because it was cool and they made it sound fast..... In the end, all they really did was make a horrible racket. I would hate to make a $25K car sound like some High School kid's '79 Camaro.

Hard data? Not really...

Here's the closest thing that I can honestly state as far as mileage is concerned. The ability for your CRD to coast without the factory muffler is a HUGE difference (mine was just removed, see above). That is the only tangible change I can identify without some numbers to back it. Being able to stay off the gas more going downhill and coasting up to an intersection from 200 yards further back certainly adds up.

And honestly, it's not much louder at all...

Well, I gotta trust an orange ape!
Have you been getting much faster spool up and acceleration number via your eyecrometer or stop watch?

Well the eyecrometer and the assometer are both inconclusive on that one... pickup does seem to be better but that may be the least precise statement ever haha.

I might give this mod a try....it looks relatively cheap and easy to fix if it doesn't work.....

Adding the lift pump and removing the stock muffler are the two best things I've done to improve driveability.

"Factory exhaust brake" is a good term to describe the stock muffler. After I removed it my mileage went up 1.5 - 2 mpg.

Note: Stan has an excellent web page documenting all the various mods he did and his experiences with them. People should check it out!
He has also been kind enough to answer several Emails on various topics including this one.
Thanks Stan!

And, based upon what I am seeing here on the forum, there seems to be enough of a consensus to give this the thumbs up. So, the "I"s have it!

Now, down to business: Which performance muffler will do the job but keep this rattling, snorting thing as quiet as possible? I don't think complete elimination of the muffler will do it for me. I know Stan used the Magnaflow, others have used a glass pack.....other brands???

Thanks all,
Chris

You have to be careful that you don't add something that negates the gains from the larger diameter pipe. I tried the "Cherry Bomb" glasspack route and it killed performance. If you are going to add a "muffler" no matter what, then get a good quality one...Borla or Magnaflow...Stainless Steel would be nice too. I have had both Magna and Borla mufflers in the past and they perform fine and have a good note/performance.

***It is free to not add a muffler at first and see how it sounds...then you can add one later with two simple cuts and welds.

As a shade-tree mechanic who's never done any exhaust welding, I'm hesitant to cut the factory setup should I decide (or if my better half should decide) that the mod has a negative impact. How much should I expect to pay if I wanted a shop to bend a cat-back (including a compatible flange) 2.5" pipe that follows all the factory bents and has hangars in the same places?

First you could remove the stock system in tact and save it.

Hard to find a shop with a mandrel bender but a good shop that can weld should be able to weld you one for $150.00 plus pipe (mandrel bent) and muffler (of your choice). Or you could just buy a replacement system like a magnaFlow for around $450.00.

Well, Im not a welder either, yet. But the red-neck fellow at some broadway fixit shop in Council Bluffs that cut out my stock muffler with a saws-all and over welded a piece of pipe staring-at-the-bead-no helmet-no glasses-all with a smoke hanging out of his mouth charged me $30 "tax included." Straight pipe, glass pack, ect. ect makes no huge difference to the sound after the turbo and cat. I have never heard a 3" turbo back exhaust on a CRD but that is the only thing I can imagine making this vehicle possibly "loud." That being said, I like the sound and performance of my "hack-job" pipe and hollow cat. and I bet a couple hundred dollar stainless cat back system would perform no different....?

OK, I just got back from having the Magnaflow installed.

First impression: Hmmm. Well, it's not much louder in normal driving. Definitely louder at idle and under load on slow hills. No noticeable HP difference. No noticeable difference in spool up speed. I have not yet checked fuel mileage differences but I don't anticipate much. BIG difference in coasting ability as has been reported by several people. The "exhaust brake" effect is significantly reduced and that is a very nice change.

Was it worth it? Not sure yet. Perhaps. It is certainly nothing dramatic on any front - no dramatic sound difference in regular driving, no dramatic performance difference except for coasting. Perhaps when combined with other mods such as the lift pump.....?? I will drive it some more tonight as there many driving situations I have not yet tested it on.

Hey Johnboy,

You're not too far. I'm in Lincoln. At least there are a few of us with CRD's around the area!

My brother bought his CRD on I80 at Cars and Jars. It is a little used car lot off the interstate between Linclon and Grand Island (he went to under grad at Hastings). Funny thing is, we bought our CRD's with in a week of each other. Mine was in south east Iowa and his was in central Nebraska, and they were the only two low mileage trucks around. The crazy thing was they both were the same color, package and with in 500 miles on the odo. Turns out mine was a POS and his has not had much trouble. I hope I am over the hill, but like 4 or 5 EGRs, crankshaft position sensor, clogged filter (bad fuel took a while to figure out...). I love the friggin thing though. There is another CRD that sits in the parking lot of the vet college but I have never discovered who drives it. Black, 245/70s, stock.

Anyhow...back to exhaust. I am pretty sure I would not like the sound of any glass pack or after market muffler on a diesel. They sound best with a simple pipe. An not one you could stuff a basket ball in like I see on some of the full size pickups, one just big enought to let her breath and sound good....

I bought mine from Plaza in Omaha. It was traded in by an old lady and only had 25k on it. I'm just starting to do the mods. I still need a nice muffler to go on. Full flow though. I won't pay for the magnaflow 15870 kit. It's just too much. My CRD was originally sold in Blair at Woodhouse. He did the scotcguard to the interior, undercoating, and the outside protective spray on the paint. I can't believe he traded it in after owning just over a year.
