 Post subject: New 08 KK got 2 mufflers?

I'm a bit confused, in this pic it looks like the KK has 2 mufflers? One large muffler before the rear axle, and then a smaller one just before the rear bumper? Is the smaller one the resonator? Typically the resonator comes just after the down-pipe and before the muffler correct? So whats going on here?!? I am going to put an after market exhaust on my KK but I want to know everything before going to a shop. Can anyone tell me what that small "mini" muffler is at the end of the exhaust tubing? I'd imagine if I were to do exhaust I'd replace the stock "big" muffler and keep the stock piping, then have them cut off that little "mini" muffler and weld a nice tip. Thanks

its a resonator at the rear bumper, they always put them after the muffler to cut down the sound even more then they have already choked it down to, if it was mine, throw on a good muffler, whatever your pleasure is, cut the resontor out, put on a nice tailpipe extension/ turndown on and be done

Off topic but I would not worry about that spare tire. I am sure that as soon as Marty gets caught up on all his orders (Hint, Hint) that there will be a brand new KK rear bumper coming soon with a tire swing so all the new Liberty owners don't have to get down and dirty when changing the tire.

Thanks again Chrysler. I gues Dodge Nitro owners don't mind that.

It sucks because they didn't have to put it under there. It sucks because they (chrysler) decided to use the Doge Nitro for the new Liberty. It sucks because it can getr badly damaged if you ever decide to actually trail with the KK. It sucks because it shows how lazy chrysler was. Put the ting on the tail gate like the KJ's have it, and give em more storage in the floor of the KK. Simple.

But NOOOOOOO they just pull the Nitro off the assembly line and stick Liberty badges and a different grille on it and say "A newly redesigned Jeep Liberty"

THAT sucks.

Aside from having to get down there to get the darned thing out when u need it....

But that is a good idea, lets all go out and steel the spare tires off of 5 other liberty's so we have a set of new wheels to use.

Could have saved a fortune on my new wheels and tires that way, what was I thinking. Who steals a spare tire? Why would you need to "hide it?"

Only thing it virtually guarantees is that it is out of sight and out of mind for regular rotation and service, guaranteeing that it wont have any air in it when the misses is at the grocery with a flat tire.

Soory, I got a little passionate about that....

woody...to the .001% of us that would actually wheel a KJ if we owned one...we could always bungee it to the roof before hitting the trail:) what I DON'T like is that the valvestem is facing UP so you have to drop it to check the air.

I don't rotate my spare anyway (this is why I had a brand-new tire on the back of my KJ when I put the MTR's on), so spare rotation is of no consequence to me:)

If you have a full sized radial like that you should rotate it.

I agree with the valve stem thingy.

But you have a brand new KK and you BUNGEE the tire to the roof? Show me a bungee that will keep a 50 lbs tire secured to your roof and I will show you a dented roof.

Nice try. It was just plain lazy on the part of Chrysler. The KJ was a VERY distinct vehicle that looked ONLY like a KJ. Now it is just like the Tahoe and Yukon, The mercury Marquis and the crown vic.... The Vega and the Monza....

Just another label off the same assembly line.

Sorry again. I like the KK's get rid of the Nitro, move the spare to the tailgate where it belongs on ALL jeeps, and give that space for secured storage.

Im not much on the spare tire being under the Jeep either. How do you get it down on the KK's?

Funny story about the Grand Cherokees. Im sure most know that they put the spare tire in a storage area in the back of the WJ's. Its nice as its inside the Jeep and out of the weather. Doesnt take 5sec to raise the cover over it and check the pressure but there is one problem with that. If you are on vacation or the alike with alot of luggage, youve got to take it all out to get to the spare tire if you have a flat! Well, with Jeeps awesome knowledge, they put the spare tire under the Jeep on the WK's but guess what?! To lower the tire youve got to take the cover out of the cargo area to get to the screw that lowers it?!!???!?!? :lol: :lol: :lol:

So this isnt OT, yes, that is a resonator that makes the exhaust nice and quite. Ive heard they help keep down droning at high engine rpms. Maybe you could put the muffler on there and see how it sounds. I know my flowmater drones like no other at speeds above 75mph and that may reduce that. Worth a try, if it cuts down on the sound to much all youve got to do it cut it out and add some pipe.

I think that reaplacing the muffler, and keeping the resonator on to see how it sounds first is a great idea. How important do you think the resonator is to performance? Is removing it, or not removing it going to give me more hp, or supress hp? Or does the resonator not play a huge role in air flow restriction?

the resonator is basically a small muffler, they design a vehicle and if they think its to loud they install a resonator, all Cads, Linolns etc have huge mufflers/resonators to keep the "noise" down

Yep replace the muffler and see but I bet you take out the resonator as well, take it out for a drive first though to be sure

To get the spare down on the KK, you lift up the cargo bed, and there's a rubber plug in there. The first time I saw it, I thought it was a 12V outlet, but it's where you crank the spare tire down.

Anyway, you get the 2 pieces out from where the jack is located on the left side and put them together. They form a crank thing that you crank like an old fashion wood drill, if you know what I mean. It lets the spare all the way to the ground. There is plenty extra cable, and the KK sits up high enough in the rear, you just stoop down, reach underneath and grab the tire and pull it out. Then you release the cable from the center of the tire and away you go.

I've seen the arguments about how hard it is to get to, how it's going to get ruined, etc etc etc etc... blah blah blah.

I still say, in my opinion, that when I changed the tire several times on my KJ, with the tire on the rear door, it took a LOT more effort to get the tire off the door and put it back on the door, vs the crank-up underneath the KK. You have to lift that big heavy booty tire up there, then move it around to find the bolt pattern, then push it onto the carrier, then hold it in place while you get a couple of lug nuts started. The whole thing just took quite a bit of strength to perform vs raising and lowering the tire underneath the KK. And yes, I've done it on both vehicles, my KJ and my KK.

I will say though, I had the spare underneath on my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo and it was a bit more effort than the KK to get the tire out and remounted.

I also had a spare on a rear carrier of my 97 Kia Sportage, and like my KJ, it was just a whole lot more effort than the KK takes to lower and remount than the KK.

I realize there is an argument about damaging the spare on the KK when offroad. However, if you look at that picture that Digger posted, then look at where the fuel tank is located on a KJ, you'll soon realize that if you do a lot of damage to the tire on the KK, you would have surely seriously damaged the fuel tank on a KJ, even if it did have a skid plate.

I work as a broadcast engineer and take my vehicles to some transmitter sites that are as rough, or rougher to get to than some of the pics I've seen posted on these boards of off-road adventures, and I've yet to damage either a spare tire or a fuel tank.

As far as checking the tire pressure goes.... the KK Sport has tire pressure sensors as standard, including the spare tire. I'm not sure, but it may be that they are part of the "popular equipment package", but I doubt you'll find a lot of Sports around without that.

If you are on vacation and have a lot of heavy suitcases in the rear to remove first, then I guess it is a pain in the booty to have it down there. I'm just thinking that most people don't carry a lot of stuff back there all the time though.

The new KK looks like a tahoe, what?? And is the word "sucks" the only word you know describing the KK, why do you hate it so much? And the location of spare tire off-roading is of no issue. I have been on some very tough trails and the spare tire is in a good location for 4 wheeling. It has never scraped or caused problems. I owned a '03 liberty and the spare on the back was a pain and limited your rear view. The KK now offers a seperate lift glass from the rear hatch, something that is very convenient, you don't have to open the rear hatch each time you need an item. Lighten up on the KK, it's a good vehicle, it's still a Jeep liberty and much improved looks inside and out!!
