KJ-BOL,
I would suggest spending your cash on a lift first. Stock tires and a lift will get you farther than new tires and no lift. Plus you can go a little bigger in tire size once your lifted.
VERY good advise - I think I just fell into this trap with bigger tires first, I need some elevation or the low hanging exhaust on the CRD is going to get ripped clear off.
Any advise to maintain the best street manners and still get a 2.5" lift?
You ever notice how it's always the guys that already have a lift and big tires that give this advice? I've never seen a post before this one where someone says they upgraded tires first and truly regretted it. I'm not even sure you have given yourself a real reason to regret it yet. I believe I read that you put 255s on already, which actually isn't recommended without a lift, correct?
In any case ... my rig is a DD more than an offroader, and I honestly think I could have gotten myself killed this winter with those Crapyear STs that came with my rig. They would break lose from a full stop in the rain for god's sake. I also don't wanna be driving around with a lift and ST tires. It just looks mickey mouse to me. I'd rather be driving around with nice a/t tires now and when I do lift, at least I have agressive tires already and to top it off, they are only an inch smaller in diameter than 265/70-16 anyhow, which is what it seems guys commonly run. I will retain my new Firestone A/T tires for onroad activities and get M/Ts on different rims once I lift. I won't have to worry about rubbing on a daily basis and I can have some really agressive mudders for offroad.
Just my 2 cents.
I don't regret it. My tires are perfect for every day driving and construction site inspection and when I get a lift they will be perfect for off road as well. BUT, if you look at the pictures of the last club off road event and see the stuff that people with a lift can go through - it becomes necessary.
I have also had 3 back surgeries, leg surgery, hip surgery, and knee surgery all by the age of 25, so I'm not up for switching extra sets of tires and rims on a whim. For me, my only chance to offroad again like I used to in my old CJ jeeps is to set up my daily driver to the maximum extent possible. Hence, I'm set up for daily driving with triple oversize tires. It's not the diameter that's a killer, it's the width and rubbing on the inner fender walls, especially where the fuel filler neck has a bump out in the driver side rear fender. So far this rubbing only occurs at or near full flex as I've tested at VERY slow speed in drainage ditches in the local park.
A 2.5" lift on my CRD and my planned wheel spacers will still be an excellent daily driver and will extend my capability to both on road and HD offroad. If I can't go where the guys with the lifts go with minimal damage, what's the point??? I'm not out to destroy a brand new rig. And trust me, from over 20 years of offroading in Arizona, that is exactly what will happen.
Where in my post do you see "truly regretted" anywhere??? My reference is that to make this month's club run I need a lift.
And yes, the P255 size is recommended without a lift, but only for CRD models currently. Talk to any Jeep dealership OR tire store such as Discount Tire, Firestone, ect. I did.
Better yet, go to the badlands website and dig around until you find the picture gallery of the terrain - it's not pretty for stockers... A simple dip in the mud means a removed exhaust system from hidden rocks. And these MOPAR skids are not going to protect much of anything. The skids are the only temporary compromise I have made, everything else is in the plan.

Thanks for the criticism though, I appreciate it.
