EVIC installation questions (2006 CRD) - what the...

Hi all,

Have any of my fellow CRD owners installed an EVIC in their non-EVIC CRDs? I scored what I thought was a 2006 KJ EVIC off Ebay, but I have my doubts as to whether this EVIC and my 2006 CRD are a proper fit. The pictures of my KJ don't match up to what I see on the various EVIC installation sites. If you can wander on over to this thread and share your wisdom:

Here is an excellent link that will show you what you need -

A summary of what you need to do - enlarge the hole where your current dome light is,
install the proper bracket under the headliner,
run the wiring.

I will see if I can find another forum link that will help with the wiring you need - you will have to run
wires to get everything to work properly.

MightyCRD, thank you so much! The second link does indeed hold the key. The mounting bracket is no longer included in all later KJs, and I will need to order and install part number 5072348AA. I'll give the dealer a call and get this ordered.

I took some pictures and wrote a how-to with an alternative solution to your EVIC wires connected to the OBDII.

It has more pictures than the other threads I found on the subject, which is why I made it when I installed my EVIC.

Hi Uffe, nice idea on the 3-phase wire! I had already placed the order for the four 20ga wires, but you provide a handy alternative.

I have a pigtail connector for the EVIC which has a bit of wire on the ends. I could strip and solder the new wires (different colors) to these stub wires, but it would be nicer to get four new terminals and crimp/solder the terminals to the ends of the new wire lengths and install with that. Is there an easy way to figure out how to buy these terminals, either from the dealer or perhaps from some online vendor? I tried looking through a few online catalogs but I quickly get lost in trying to identify what terminals I need.

I know this bit of ugliness would be hidden from view, but it seems like a good opportunity to try my hand at re-terminaling a connector. If this doesn't pan out, I'll go the splice-and-dice route.

I am really striking out in attempts to get a male plug for the evic that I purchased. Boneyards in my area will not allow an individual to prospect for and remove parts, citing injury liability concerns. And they are not interested in sending one of their employees out to seach for just a plug. The last one that I contacted said they'd do it for $75. Has anybody found a source for this plug? And please don't tell me about the Dodge Intrepid harness option for $37 - that part is incorrectly listed on one site and really costs $400+.

I'd really love to help you out. This has to be a standard type connector used in all ODBII cars I gather. Chrysler at least must use this connector in many other applications.

If you don't mind me asking, can you solder wires directly on your EVIC and make your own plug male/female behind the wire instead? What I am getting at is if you can solder 4 wires directly onto the EVIC terminal you can cut the wires and install your own 4-wire plug of choice for it. This will be cheaper for you than going to the wreckers and get disappointed every time

I see you too went with adding two wires into pin 16. Have you checked if the EVIC works yet?

I know you can do that without having it sitting in the dome area

Hi Uffe,

Yep, I figured I would follow your lead and see what happens. I soldered the always-on into the switched line, then soldered that into the OBD-II harness. That way, if I decide to snip that line and rerun it to another source, I'm not touching the factory wiring again.

I dry-tested the EVIC and it comes on with the key. I wonder if the functionality is any different/better if the always-on line is actually connected to an always-on power source?

I thought about that too. I think there could be some memory stuff which can be kept with the always on lead.

However, all what the EVIC does is post the data which comes from the xCMs anyway. The data is stored internally in them and is read by the EVIC when they power on again.

Not sure you gain anything by attaching that wire like they meant it to be attached.

Success! More pictures posted. Cutting the headliner was harder than I thought because there were some points where I needed to trim within 1/4" of the edge of the EVIC to provide room for obstructions. What I ended up doing was concentrating on the clip end first. Once I could feel the clips seating in their holes, I knew that was where the EVIC wanted to sit and I put masking tape along the edge as a guide so I knew where to cut.

I don't think I used the right screw or a long enough screw because it never fully tightened. I probably need to get more threads up in that plastic, but it's good enough for now.

When I replace the screw, I'll pop the EVIC out and follow up with a picture of my headliner hacking masterpiece.

Ahh you can see which doors are open on your EVIC. I cannot. If I open a rear door or tailgate it will show, but not if I open the front doors.

Hi Uffe,

Yep! But, the key has to be in and turned to power the EVIC. I am wondering, if a constant 12V were supplied on that unswitched line, maybe the "door ajar" messages would show even when the key is not inserted?

To other CRD owners with factory-installed EVICs - does the EVIC indicate doors open when the key is out of the ignition?

Excellent point! I should try and find out. It won't be difficult, all you need is a 12v battery and an extra wire. Unless you want to go ahead and do the install properly instead

My next opportunity to work on the CRD is next weekend (it's my wife's daily driver and she works long days). Please feel free to try it out!

I will need to do a bit of work to remove the EVIC and find out which wire is the one I need to remove. I think the easiest thing is to pull the evic out from the dome and hook the 12v wire to the domelight power lead (which is on when the door open) and see what's what...

Maybe I can try it today, I'm on a course and I'm dead tired already, but I'll give it a thought for sure!

I looked at the guide. There is no reason to test it. The blue wire which we hook up to the B+ on the OBDII port is meant to hook up with something that only comes on with ignition.

I even went and tested it, no reaction on the EVIC. Nearly wanted to murder myself for even going into that wire hell
