I'm rather new here, (although I've been quietly trolling around for a couple of months now). Before anyone asks, yes, yes, yes, I have been reading, reading and then even reading some more! I'm still amazed at the vast amount of information on this site.

I wanted to kinda put out a last call for my CRD. So, I'd like to see if anyone might have suggestions or odd problems & quirks that I can look into before taking the lil' rig into dealership for my final walkthru. I have a little more than a week before my 3/36 expires. I plan on taking it on Thur or Fri night.

My CRD is an '05 Limited. I bought it used last May with 12K an it now has 22K. The only work done at the dealer so far has been the ball joint recall (previous owner).

Here is my little list so far:
Low coolant---where did it go? Front windows sound crunchy
Low p/s fluid---where did it go? Front windows rattle (partly down)
Stutters/misses from stop Noisy pulley bearing (mostly when cold)
Trans shutters (in OD) 50-65 mph Slow trans engagement (a.m. [parked overnight])
Turbo hoses soft & oily Check the cast iron shocks & struts (below 20*)

Two other weird things:

After heavy throttle, (passing, merging, etc.) it feels like it continues to rev (slow throttle response?) I think it needs to shift or cut the throttle or do something. Any thoughts.? Is this just a turbo thing? I had a turbo Dodge Shadow back in the early 90's and almost seem to remember it acting in a similar way.

Back in the summer I had one weird major malfunction of the CRD. I pulled out of a parking lot, into traffic, hit the throttle and nothing. Well, almost nothing. I remember hitting the throttle, revs went high, feeling like it was in 4th OD, going about 4 MPH, puking smoke, and the cars in my mirror traveling about 50MPH and coming fast. I was on the road, and needed to go about one city block to get back off. I turned on to the side street, parked by the curb, and wondered what happened. I think it idled ok but the CEL was on. I decided to shut it down. I let it rest a minute or two, restarted it and carefully test drove it thru the neighborhood. It seemed ok and continued on my way home. The CEL light stayed on for at least few days but has run normal ever since. This has never happened again. My first thought back then was EGR valve, stuck somewhere it didn't belong. It was probably more like a TCM problem or maybe multiple malfunctions. I never did take it to the dealer back then because the light went out and seemed to drive normal again. I'm hoping that it stored a code. I'll ask.

I might have one or two more things for my list but I can't think anymore tonight.

Thank you to all!!!

P.S. I'm on the SEGR list.[/b]

If you have an 05 you should have a 7/70 warranty, not a 3/36...

Sounds to me like a shot torque converter. Slow response, CEL, shuddering at speeds.

Low coolant -- hard to say. Some loss of coolant is not that big of a deal...substantial loss indicates a problem (such as, perhaps, coolant getting inside the engine and mixing with oil). An oil analysis would tell you for sure for $20 bucks or so. Do you know who handled the basic mantainence on the Jeep prior to your purchase? If it is loosing a significant quantity of coolant, you either have a leak somewhere in the system, or something more serious in the engine resulting from running bad seals, the oil too long or using an incorrect oil.

Rattle/crunchy windows -- sounds like dust or grit got into the drive system. Should be fixable by the dealer. The windows on my 06 are a little slow, but no crunch or rattle.

Low p/s fluid -- again, how low? Some loss over time is not uncommon. If it is losing a lot, then you've got a leak somewhere.

The engine noise issues you are having -- stutters and misses, etc... -- should have a diesel mechanic look at them if you think it is series. All diesels sound like a barrel of nails being kicked down the stairs at a dead stop. They do not idle smoothly and quietly the same as a gas engine. On the other hand, how bad is it? If it sounds like it is going to stall and die, you've got a problem.

Trans shudder is most likely a dying torque converter, since yours is an 2005. Has it had the F37 and F31 recalls done? If not, do you like the truck and want to hold on to it? If the dealer replaces the TC under warranty, you will get stuck with the software "upgrades" that will neuter the shift points of the vehicle to protect the poorly designed stock TC. Air in fuel can cause a similar feeling.

What do you mean by slow tranny engagement? Slow to shift into overdrive? That's normal until a transmission gets warmed up, not sure there is any fix for that (other than maybe disconnecting your transmission cooler). It could be another indication of a dying TC as well.

Soft, oily turbo hoses are normal unless you install a Provent or some other CCV filter system. The engine (like most all diesels) is designed to vent oily gasses from the CCV into the turbo.

I have not personally noticed the shock issue, but maybe the tow package comes with upgraded shocks. A set of rancho's would take care of it for $100-$150 bucks.

The revving after heavy throttle sounds like a normal turbo thing to me. The 2.8 CRD has monstrous torque for its size, but like all diesels, doesn't produce much HP. The turbo compensates for that, but it needs high RPM's/exhaust pressure to work. So the sequence in our CRD is stomp acceleration pedal-->engine revs for 1-2 seconds-->turbo spools up-->acceleration pours in. It isn't like a V8 gasser where there is instant power for passing. On the flip side, the CRD produces V8-like torque at twice the MPG.

Your stalling/belching smoke issue sounds like an EGR malfunction or fuel system malfunction to me. That it went away on its own makes me think EGR.

22k is about when my first EGR was replaced.

Another idea on the coolant leak. Leaky water pump. I hope this isn't the case, if so, I hope it is covered by warranty. I heard this part can be expensive.

Get the windows fixed. The liberty is known for bad regulators. I've gone through 3 on on drivers side and one on the passenger side.

I've had my two rear ones replaced and the front driver's side is getting slow. When they replace them do they do something to upgrade them so that they don't keep failing?
