My 2005 CRD Liberty has 50Kmiles and three times now the car has lost power with considerable Pre-ignition knock, CEL doe not light. If I shut the vehicle down, wait a bit it will start after about three tries and run fine. The dealer service department claims they can't do anything because the CEL is not lighted. Also my CRD is the only CRD they have seen.

If the above description roughly what people call limp mode? I have put in the ORM.

Thanks.

No, that would be a totally different issue. What you're getting is a mass of fuel injected without any air, OR... "normal" quantity of fuel injected but a closed throttle valve which is choking off the air (oxygen supply) and thus causing misfire. This could be caused by slow failing of the Throttle Valve Assembly.

Did you unplug the MAF sensor on the air filter box, or did you unplug the MAP sensor on the intake manifold? Disconnecting either of these sensors should light the CEL, but only the MAF will give benefits of the ORM. If you unplug the MAP sensor, you'll get no boost which could be causing your problem.

Limp home is a totally different characteristic. It is a limited torque value such that the vehicle will move off the road but it should still operate correctly (no misfire, smoke, etc). You say that it takes three times to restart - is this three times before it will fire, or three times before full power is restored?

I unplugged the MAF on the air box.

The first time I experienced the problem the odometer was about 2k miles with no ORM. The second time was at 49K miles with ORM third time was at 52K miles with ORM. The only time I talked with the dealer was the first time at 2k miles. Now the CEL is always lighted.

It seems to occur after attempting to accelerate after slowing for a turn or etc. I never had the problem accelerating after a full stop.

I had something that sounds like you had so time back ago.
Left home, several turns and just chug chug. Felt and sounded like
it was running on 1 or 2 cylinders. I pulled off the road, shut off, restarted
and it was fine.
I did pull the MAP same day trying to find the problem and it was crudded
up, cleaned it and haven't had the problem since.
I do have the SEGR and EHM now so the soot and slimy mess
is not going through the engine.

When's the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

If you ever get a "limp home", you will defintily know it.....sorta like a broken throttle cable (if we had one). Step on it and nothing happens, if you're at hwy speed you actually slow down now matter how much "go" pedal is used. Really a wierd sensation.

Industry "limp" is sensor induced to protect the equipment and lights the CEL.

Here many call what sounds like you are experiencing as "limp" however yours seems a little different if there is pre-ignition knock. Mr. Mopar is likely the one to listen to then.

Without the knock then it is likely a common yet undiagnosed fuel issue that is most common in hot weather and is likely related to air. The best solution to it has been a lift pump in or near the fuel tank.

I had this happen two days ago. NO CEL.
Just a gradual loss of power leading to a very rough idle.
Turn off then on 3 times and it is cured.
This is the second time since 6 months, 5000 miles ago

Of course, my wife is with me EVERY TIME THIS HAPPENS !!!! WTF

I blame it in the transmission , earning credits towards the SUNCOAST UPGRADE (which has nothing to do with this, certainly, but what does she know, right..?!?!).

I cant pinpoint any common denomitator here. Seems random, like a ECM hiccup...

Would really like to know what this is.

I never got a CEL when the limp mode hit me. Once was on acceleration into traffic, really bad experience to which I logged a NHTSA report and encourage all of you to do the same due to safety concerns. Maybe it will get them to look it over and possibly recall, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. (you can search for my post on it for NHTSA info)
Second time was while at 55 mph, just stopped making power no matter what. Coasted to a stop.

Both times, just stopped the vehicle and recycled the ignition (once) and all was fine. Can't stand the anomalies! I'd rather know there was a known issue than just this random act of aggravation.

No such thing as 'pre-ignition' ping, rattle, or knock under your hood(s), folks - being for a heat-ignition engine, Diesel fuel has cetane-improver to promote ignition\combustion in hot environment(s) - that's the ping, rattle, and knock Diesels are so famous for, but certainly not 'pre' ignition - what you're hearing, that increased rattle, is ECM advancing injection timing due faulty input from sensors, or failing sensor(s), or bubbles in fuel due to low fuel condition, as from air leaks or plugged fuel filter or low\no fuel in tank.

Actual engineered-in limp-mode calls for fixed timing and fuel rates, no Boost, trans shifts second and third only, just enuff power and hookup to limp you home, usually accompanied by any DTC's from the failed system(s) - cycling the IGN can restore normal mode, but any DTC's will be stored for polling at some later juncture

First check for previously-described eye-witness symptoms is fuel filter check, incl fuel manager head inspection for leaks therefrom - after fuel supply is verified, next would be connector integrity, particularly the MAP sensor, but others also, such as ECT, Cam and Crank Position Sensors, etc, any of which can put you in limp mode.

And remember: a faulty connection is as good (or rather, as bad!) as a faulty sensor - either failure will result in same symptom - thus, replacing a 'bad' sensor 'fixes' the problem, where R&R'ing the connector, restoring circuit continuity, may have been the required fix - always try removing any connector, inspecting both connector halves for oxidation, loose pins, broken wires, etc, and restoring the connection first, B4 trying a new sensor - if you find no problem in the connection, then it's likely the sensor.
