No such thing as 'pre-ignition' ping, rattle, or knock under your hood(s), folks - being for a heat-ignition engine, Diesel fuel has cetane-improver to promote ignition\combustion in hot environment(s) - that's the ping, rattle, and knock Diesels are so famous for, but certainly not 'pre' ignition - what you're hearing, that increased rattle, is ECM advancing injection timing due faulty input from sensors, or failing sensor(s), or bubbles in fuel due to low fuel condition, as from air leaks or plugged fuel filter or low\no fuel in tank.
Actual engineered-in limp-mode calls for fixed timing and fuel rates, no Boost, trans shifts second and third only, just enuff power and hookup to limp you home, usually accompanied by any DTC's from the failed system(s) - cycling the IGN can restore normal mode, but any DTC's will be stored for polling at some later juncture
First check for previously-described eye-witness symptoms is fuel filter check, incl fuel manager head inspection for leaks therefrom - after fuel supply is verified, next would be connector integrity, particularly the MAP sensor, but others also, such as ECT, Cam and Crank Position Sensors, etc, any of which can put you in limp mode.
And remember: a faulty connection is as good (or rather, as bad!) as a faulty sensor - either failure will result in same symptom - thus, replacing a 'bad' sensor 'fixes' the problem, where R&R'ing the connector, restoring circuit continuity, may have been the required fix - always try removing any connector, inspecting both connector halves for oxidation, loose pins, broken wires, etc, and restoring the connection first, B4 trying a new sensor - if you find no problem in the connection, then it's likely the sensor.
