Guys:

Going to attempt my first oil change on my Libby. Gonna use the Mobil 1 synthetic from Walmart.

Any tips? Especially like: which is the drain plug, and how do I get it open (they don't look like standard heads)?

Yours in shame,

-Paul

Use your first oil change as an opportunity to install a Fumoto quick-drain valve. The pan threads are soft and can strip if too much torque is applied. With the Fumoto, your oil changes are easier and your threads are no longer a concern.

Yeah! What Chris said!!!!
Best thing you could ever do and will save you a LOT of grief!

I for one, have never prefilled the oil filter. On the CRD or my Semi or my ag tractor. oil pressure comes up pretty quick.

Did you use a new , used or no washer with the Fumoto? My original oil plug did not have a washer and did seem to leak a little. I still have a drip under my CRD but I am not sure if it is coming from the plug or elsewhere.

there is supposed to be a washer on there... i'd watch out
some that don't have washers have destroyed their threads
and have had to replace the pan/ get a heli-coil.

who was the last to change your oil?

WASHER!!!! Don't know if it was new or used as my dealer did it. They had been changing my oil and when I went to do my first and install my Fumoto I couldn't get the old plug out as it was too tight. I let the dealer do it and install the Fumoto and my oil.

X3 (or x6 or something) Fumotos are great. You can use a length of 5/8 ID tubing and drain it straight into your oil catch container. Don't forget to use a new washer if you can. They seal a little better even if you don't HAVE to use one.... Don't overtorque. I use 20-25 ft-lbs and that works well. You can always give it a touch more if it's under-tight (if it drips), but you never get a second chance once it's been over-torqued.

For the oil, I think pre-filling benefits non-syn oil users more. With full-syn, you already have enough oil the cylinder walls to protect it on start-up. The CRD filter is near the bottom of the sump anyway and the simple act of filling the fresh oil will partially fill the new filter. moistening the o-ring is a good idea, though. It helps you hand-tighten to the right torque.

What is the part number for the washer? I tried a lostKJ site and a web search but couldn't find it.

It's probably a stock item at your local dodge/jeep dealer. I think they charge about 3 bucks, which is highway robbery, but if you only need to get "one" for the rest of the life of the vehicle.... :)

The oil drain plug with the allen head "T-50" style is soft and a poor design. I stripped the inside head and had to run an easy out up into the area you would use the allen wrench or "T" style tool. The easy out got a good grip and fortunately the drain plug came out the way it should. I ordered a new drain plug from the Jeep dealer. Evidently VM or Jeep has agreed that the design is poor because the new one has a nice large Hex Head on it. I think it is about a 5/8" head. However, based on what I have read, becarefull with that so that you don't apply to much torque when tightening as folks are saying the oil pan threads are soft.

Also, after seeing a couple oil drips on the floor, I found the brass washer in the bottom of the drain pan (dah - oops). I put the washer back on during the next oil change and now the floor is clean and dry again. I believe any hardware store would have one of these washers though.

I agree that the Fumoto quick drain plug is probably a good way to go - then even a Caveman can do it! :)

So...How come the Fumoto F-102 has a 3/8" thread and the F-106 has a 16mm thread, yet they are both recommended? Which is the right thread? I don't want to f-it up....the pan sounds soft as butter from what you all are saying.

Was waiting on some of the heavy hitters showing up but not as yet.
My old Fumoto is a F-108N 16mm-1.50
The adapter approved for this was. PF 3/8 to 16mm.
I have both the adapter and the fumoto as above.
I have no problem with this setup so I cannot say about the newer versions.

Just my opinion is all.

Wear latex gloves, the oil in these trucks is really nasty, will literally stain your skin.

orange goop helps to solve that problem. Just did an oil change last night. I love the fact that I don't need to jack up the liberty to do the change.

I bought the fumoto and adapter last summer and for some reason I don't think it fits. I try to hand tighten it to get it started and seems way too tight. Could I have gotten a wrong size adapter. Anyone else with this problem. I have just been using the original plug.

Soooo, you are saying 3/8" thread is on the jeep pan?

The Fumoto for our jeep without the adapter is a F-102 which is a PF-3/8"
I have both the old with the adapter and the new F-102 here. The F-102 I have not installed
but what is installed is the above post.
I am looking at the sales receipt here so that is where the info comes from.
