G'day Lads and Ladettes,

As some of you know if your in Australia, and some of you don't know probably nearly everyone else on the planet :P , I have had a few issues with my OME rear coils over the past 2 and a bit years, most of which is the sag factor when you actually keep a load in the back for an extended period, couple that with the fact that when I had my lift done NO additional bumpstops were added, so overcompression was also a factor, when flexing the rear of the KJ, the coils would stack badly (IE - coil binding metal on metal) that also causes them to sag quite quickly. I had the first set of coils replaced within 3 months of the original lift, and then extra coil packers had to be used to keep the rear end up where it should be, that in itself was only a bandaid, as the coils packers only gave extra lift , but, did not address the fact that now I had less actual travel in the coils, so the rear would bottom out easily, and when I put a load of gear in the back would sag down to its original unlifted height.

Sooooooo, I spoke with CRDSTU (OzLtd here on LOST) about the problem and he went about specing up a set of Extra Heavy Duty Rear coils, that would address the sag, need for coil spacers ( to get the lift I wanted) and the ability to keep a reasonable load in the back all the time without sagging down. What he came up with is fantastic, they are a heavier duty coil wire that is specifically engineered to hold more weight, they are about 1/2 and inch higher that the OME Heavy duty coils ( phyically when out of the car standing together) and when we installed them the car sat up nicely in the rear. Generally, unladen, the rear of my KJ would sit at about 555 - 560mm (hub centre to guard), but when you put stuff in the back it would sag down to around 525 - 530, Bad for travelling and going camping. So I packed up the car with all the stuff I would normally carry (or like to carry) and measured it, 535mm. Then we installed the New Custom Coils Stu had made, 40mins later with exactly the same load in the car, 555mm was the measurement. GREAT. Remember the car was now sitting up 20mm higher with just the new coils, as apposed to sitting low with the old coils that required 30mm of extra help from the packers to sit 20mm lower than the new coils alone. Drove around with the load, ride was great , we were a little worried that it may be too stiff , but , that was not the case. But the big challange was to see what was going to happen when unloaded. Was the rear going to go far too high, that was the question, so I unloaded nearly everything from the rear, and even after running the fuel tank to almost empty the rear only jumped up to 565- 570mm, ride was still great, didn't bouce around, was not too stiff as I also replaced my old Pro-comp shockes with a new set of CRDSTUs custom longtravel rears. So all in all a great success.

Here's the new coils, beside the OME's
Image

We drove the KJ up an embankment to flex it up to change the coils, we simply undid the lower shock mount to let the rear fall down as far as possible
Image

Stu, removed the old coils and packers ( I had 3 x 10mm packes each side )

Image

NO coils

New Coils - NO packers

Sitting Nicely

Beside Stu's CRD, mine full of gear, His, nothing in the back, and they sat at the same height.....Very happy
Image

This is what I had in the back, and, still had 555mm of lift..and Yes those two jerry cans are full, and I had a full tank of fuel.

If anyone else has had the same issue with load, and sagging, just PM OzLtd (Stu), I'm sure he'll be able to see you right..:p

Heres a video of the KJ on a RTI ramp.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0yycbMMI7o

To add to this I also installed a set of extra long travel shocks Stu had made, to add greater Flex in the rear, the new shockies are 650mm in length, my old Pro-comps were only 560mm. Stu also had extra heavy duty crush tubes installed into the mounts to stand up to the rigures of offroading.

The New shocks compared to the standard and Pro-comps

Image

In this pic you can see the Hew Heavy duty crush tubes, far better than what comes standard, you can see the nice thick one piece tube, actually turned and drilled instaed of just flat metal rolled into a tube.

Image

The Old crush tube in my old stockies, yopu can clearly see the difference in the quallity of metal, and the damage that off roading causes to them, I had a bit of a "clunk" in the rear end with these, I wonder why ;)

Image

In these two pics you can see just how much longer the new shocks are when mounted to the top mount and left to hang down.
Image
Image

I have put in a set of extra bump stops at the bottom of the coil mount, you can just see them in this pic, they are made from a high density rubber mallet, cut both sides of the mallet head off, made two nice 40mm bumpstops, and placed them at the bottom of the coil, that will stop overcompression of the new coils, as well as stop those pesky 31/10.5/15's from ripping off my flares all the time.
Image
Image
And Here, is a bit of flex, I only ran it up a mound of dirt in the back yard so far so this is the only pic, hoping to get out soooooooon, and really try it out..

Anyone interested in these extra long travel shocks for the KJ, again, get intouch with OzLtd..

alll the best cmohr

Thanks Rayman i appreciate that, thank-you. You know, its a real testomony to the stength of the KJ, when we had it all flexed up on the embankment, we ended up openning most of the doors and even flipped up the rear glass, and all closed purfectly, no sign what so ever of the body flexing causing door and glass closing hassles, shows just how strong these puppies are!!!!

You might be surprised just how cheap it could be to get them Tom, after all they are "effectively" a 4 to 5 inch lift for the rear of the KJ. 570mm from hub centre to flare, thats around 22.5 inches, I read in the 4" lift thread that they had 22-1/8th inches there, sooooo..., but really they are specifically designed to carry weight in the rear, and keep at least 3 to 3.5 inches of lift.

Stu's da Man!!! He has also spec'd a set of front coils for the CRD that all the CRD guys Downunder are raving about, and I know there are already a few guys ordering these rear coils for their rigs.

So this would be a rear lift with nothing more than these spings and longer shocks?

By the way I like the yellow... 8)

Nice looking set-up! Like the method of changing out the coils, gotta be the best way to do it. 8)

Just to make sure, those are not the OME 132L's, right? They are insanely long. Got a pic of all the shocks compressed beside of each other?

Yep, Thats correct, I wanted a good lift without any need for packers in the rear, as packers are only a band-aid and not a real solution for more height.

Nope, all's good so far, I've been off road a little, and done heaps of daily driving to and from work and a number of trips to the beach, perfect at highway speeds, no vibs, no wobbles. On my KJ, I always say that as all our cars are different and can react differently.

Ha ha, Yes, it was easy to do the coils like that, it was a Saturday moring and we had the car up there on a back street, everybody that drove by stopped to see if we "needed any help" they thoght we were mucking around and got stuck :P

No I think Stu said these are different shockies to those , but, I will check, I had a feeling the OME 132L's are about 610mm extended, but not sure, maybe some who has them can confirm that.

Sorry I didn't get a pic of the shocks compressed, but, can definately say they were longer, another reason for my large bumpstops in the rear, not only to stop overcompression of the coils, but, to stop the shockes from being over compressed as well, don't want to bend anything there.

Ahhh, well there you go.

I had a look at the boxes an dthey only have a "custom"order code on them that would relate only to Stu's ordering.

So, where were those springs made? Where can I get a set of those shocks? details? How much to ship to Wyoming? :D I really want a set of those. My rear is sagging badly and I don't wanna mess with just putting in more spacers.

Yep, thats right. Stu has them made by King Springs, the same guys that make the OME's Yes, but, completely different material and specifications used in the construction of these. The shockies are OME Nitro chargers, with extra long struts and custom crush tubes and rubbers.

All available thru Stu - OzLtd is his name here on LOST, he has a company that can provide OS shipping, while your about it, you should order a snokel as well, Stu has direct distrubutor rights for the KJ snorkels from Gibson "Airflow" Snorkels. Should be getting mine very soon.

PS - Dont forget to put in extended bumpstops...

Hey guys, I've just added a short video of the KJ on a RTI Ramp, from our Camp Coff's Jeep Weekend end here in Australia.

Thanks to Gold Coast Jeepers Alex and Marni for the footage. Surprised a lot of folks there with how well it did, even out flexed quite a few of the leaf spring SFA Jeeps there.

No, rear swaybar still on, just the front off. I find with this setup I have absolutely no problems flexing the rear to the limit of the shockies.

Flex = Traction and Ability :P :P which = FUN!!!!!
