My wife called me this morning and said that the CEL came on, I had her go by Auto Zone when she got off work. They pulled one code, P0401. I have tried to do some research on the site about it, but I just pull up too much info. I tried reading through it and I got overwhelmed with all of the info.

Here is what I know:
P0401=Insufficient EGR Flow
The Jeep is an 05 with about 48,000 miles on it.
I have a Chrysler Warranty, that supposably covers "everything mechanical".

When everyone one started having these problems we did not have our CRD, so I don't really much, other than there are two parts of the EGR, and the dealer tries to change one(the cheaper of the two) and it is usually the other one that is bad. I also remember that the part that usually went bad was on "universal backorder", is that still the case? Does it need to be fixed ASAP, or can unplugging it work for a few hundred miles of weekend driving?(all off road of course)

I am just looking for a little refresher here. I know about the SERG, but the wife really does not like the idea of me cutting into things. And my main goal in life is to keep here happy

Thanks!

Yes there is a flow control valve and the egr valve. If your under warranty you should be ok. I ended up buying the 100k bumper to bumper warranty so that emissions would be covered. If you plan on keeping it get the extended warranty.

If you aren't having performance issues keep driving it. I drove mine from North Carolina back to St. Louis with the check engine light and a P401 no problems.

Click, point out to her that even though in the old days a CEL meant she was teetering on the verge of blowing, STOP ***NOW***!!!!, today, they use it for everything including one tire is a tad low on air. Stupid idea, IMHO, but there it is.

The 401 error is either going to come with crummy performance or no visible effect, and it sounds to me like it is the latter in your case. When that happens, it probably means that either the EGR is stuck shut, ie no exhaust to the intake, or the FCV is stuck open, meaning it won't close down to suck exhaust into the intake. IMHO, both possibilities are good for you, but not perhaps for the environment, as they would suggest NOx is likely going to exceed spec.

My dealer replaced the cheaper EGR 3 times, before replacing both at once, and that solved the problem. But that is not likely going to be the route any other dealer would take in any other case.

I just read through the EGRCCVPRCACEGRFCV post, is there anyway for the dealers to tell if it is the EGR or the FCV? I would only like to have it in the shop once, since I will not let my local dealer touch anything CRD specific, I have to take it about 30 miles away and I have a $50 deductible that I really like to pay only once.

They can, but if they are the original parts it is really a moot issue. They had to redesign both U.S. spec parts. The original EGR flow control had plastic gears controling the valve that stripped out over time. The original EGR was subpar and clogged up with LSD, so they redesigned it. Both are likely to die at some point, especially the FCV. I would push to get both replaced now and be done with it. At the minimum-- get them to test both. I still have the original of both-- but use SEGR. I still expect the FCV to die at some point in the future.

Hi.
My work order says as follows.
Blah blah,
Perform diag EGR found flow control valve not closing when activated-replaced
valve test drove- MIL light returned- reran test rplaced EGR valve- ECM is current
1 5166555ab valve-egr
1 5142815aa gasket-egr valve
1 5142613aa gasket-egr airflow control val
1 5142806aa t/body-egr airflow control val
1 5142799aa valve-electronic throttle
1 5066386aa coolant-coolant

Phew, Done
These were done at 22980 miles. Yea, I bought it new.
If any of this makes sense to you, I hope it has helped.

Sorry, see if this makes more sense

5166555ab valve-egr Is this the actual EGR?
5142799aa valve-electronic throttle Is this the FCV?

Not a mechanic here but it would look like those are the part numbers.
Notice above they changed the FCV first. It is easy to get to. MIL light
still came on, than they changed out the EGR. Pain to get to.
Also have to remember first year I bought it, all the fuel was 500PPM.
Since than it has changed to 15PPM.
Right after they changed out both those parts, I did the EHM to keep all that
crap out of the system.
Life is good at the moment.
Steve

I just got the P0401 code a couple months ago.

They changed out the EGR first. The MIL came back on before I got home (about 5 miles).

They replaced the EGR again. The MIL came back on before I got home (about 5 miles).

They replaced the FCV. No more MIL.

Was it the EGR or the FCV or both? I don't know, but when they replaced both it stopped throwing the P0401 code and no more MIL.
